Hey, we are a lot alike in that I also am a miler at heart who dabbles in the marathon world. Only you run faster than I do, but I am improving quickly. As for marathon training advice, mileage is key to finish and loads of tempo and marathon pace work is key to going fast. Mix tempo and marathon pace work into your long and medium long runs (but always take a recovery day before going hard again). Also a VO2max workout once a week helps. Buy daniels running formula if you don't already have it. Also read once a runner (great fictional book about a miler)if have haven't already.

Oh hey Joe! That's cool that you found the blog! I was going to tell you but I didn't remember. Anyway, I'm ready to run again now. Took a long break over the weekend and I feel great! But I won't be doing much this week since it's state. Are you going up for state?

From Karl on Mon, May 12, 2008 at 01:05:38

Oh and nice mileage today! We'll get some of that going after state! See ya monday!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, May 12, 2008 at 13:06:55

Joe - welcome to the blog. With proper training a sub-3 hour marathon for somebody with your speed is a jog, especially on the St. George course. You should be looking to run 2:30 - 2:35 this year, and eventually work your way under 2:20.

I suggest that you do the following:

a) get out 6 days a week, no excuses, make the time to run the miles no matter what.

b) run easy pace. Do not do any speed until you get up to 70 miles a week. Do not push base building runs. This one should be in red and in bold capitals for emphasis. Many ambitious college-age runners get injured or overtrain by running 6:30 pace or faster in most of their runs when they cannot even race a marathon at that pace. If you cannot hold a certain pace for a marathon, it is too fast for base building. Keep it down to 7:20, no faster, but go longer if you feel extra energy, that is the whole purpose of slowing the run down.

c) Run no less than 8 miles every day to start with. If you feel good, go more. If you feel bad, go slower.

d) Go to bed on time. Girls can wait. Date the ones that will ride a bike along with you or maybe even run in the morning. The added benefit of that is that you will end up with a wife that supports your running goals.

e) Do not eat junk. Up to a certain age X determined by genetics and life-time activity level your body can get rid of the junk you eat and you do not notice it. But overtime you exhaust this clean-up resource and then it hits you like a ton of bricks. All of a sudden your speed is gone, your endurance is gone, your motivation is gone. If people did not eat junk the master's age would be 45 or maybe 47, and we would not have age divisions between 18 and 45.

From MichelleL on Mon, May 12, 2008 at 18:57:48

Welcome to the blog! I agree with almost everything Sasha has said. Make sure you run most runs easy. If it is killing you to do slower than 7:20 EVERY run, then I think it would be ok to throw in a moderate tempo run once a week so long you don't kill yourself. The keys to good marathon pace tempo is that there should be no real risk of failure (giving up on the workout). Make sure you don't increase your miles too quickly (10% increase per week, but carefully listening to your body and cutting back some weeks when your body tells you to). I did my first marathon last year, worked up from 20 miles/wk in April to 70 in the late summer. I think it is rather unrealistic to decide at this point a real time goal for St. George. I would sign up for the Hobble Creek 1/2 marathon asap (they fill up very fast) and do some 1/2 marathons in the summer and based off those races and your summer training you'll be able to pinpoint your first marathon goals. Well, I guess I've written enough. You asked for tips, there's some :)

moderate to easy pace today. Ran about 25 minutes then stretched real good and ran a couple of miles more around the track with some easy strides on the straightaways to loosen up. Legs are alright from saturday's long run but a little tired. Not sore though, and I actually felt very good today. Made it a point to eat good stuff today and I felt it.

Oh, and thanks for everyones help on the marathon stuff. I'm gonna finish this last week of track season easy and then start to get into the mileage within the next week. I've kinda been helping out with and training with the HHS track team to get back in shape after not running for 2 years so that's what I've been doing But as soon as the season is over next week its base building time. 1/2 mile warmup. 40 minutes 6 miles on the Angel Heights loop with a couple of extentions. Moderate pace about 6:40 average with a lot of wind so faster on the way out and slower coming back. Left leg felt much better though still a little weak. But it doesn't hurt anymore so that's good :) Anytime I started to feel it I eased off on the effort and made it through alright. Followed that with 1/2 mile cooldown and some good stretching. Felt great!

Man, I know I complain about it too much but I am sooooo tired of the wind. I can't even get a good relaxing run in because I have to fight the wind at least half the time if I'm lucky and it doesn't change direction. Is the wind not blowing ANYWHERE?? Grrrr. Well, it's supposed to quit tonight so I'm crossing my fingers. And toes. And any other extremity that can be crossed. Looks pretty funny:)

Man, I just watched Luke Puskedra run an 8:54 3200--how could I not run? Came home after watching the boys take 2nd at State Track (YEAH!) and watching Karl absolutely tear it up and I was really motivated and even though it was 9 PM I went for 10 miles. 67 minutes, so between 6:40 and 6:45 pace the whole way. Felt great, especially the last 5 miles. Really relaxed and felt like I could run the whole marathon that way. And it was an absolutely gorgeous night. Perfect temperatures. Went on the Bench Lake loop (plus 1/2 mile on the track to make even 10) so I was out in the fields smelling the fresh cut alfalfa and the irrigation was running so I hit some nice cool spots, and it was almost a full moon so I could see everything almost plain as day. Ahhhh! That's what running is all about. Or at least part of it:) Great day today.

Taking the day off.  Knees and thighs are sore for some reason.  But that's alright.  This week is healing week.  Bought some new shoes today.  Saucony ProGrid Guide's.  Feel very nice compared to my hashed Asics.  Never liked asics anyway.

Anyone know warning signs of knee injuries?  Just curious.  It's normal for me to have my knees be a little sore for a couple of weeks after starting mileage training, but where I haven't run long mileage for 2.5 years and stuff I just want to make sure I don't screw myself up like my dad did.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 20:06:29

10 miles on Saturday in 67 minutes was excessive. I cannot repeat this often enough - learn to run slow! Going long is not what kills you, it is going fast. 6:30 is fast. I race a marathon at 5:30 pace. But I find 6:30 pace too fast for most of my runs. That is one reason I very rarely get injured.

Do not take this week off. Run easy instead. Run girl pace - 8:00 or slower. For as long as your knee will let you. Healing happens faster when you run easy than when you do not run at all. In 23 years the longest I've ever taken off is 3 days, and that was illness-related. I believe that is another part of the no injury secret. When your body does nothing for too long it loses its ability to resist injuries. When you give it consistent moderate stress day after day it eventually becomes injury-immune.

From dave holt on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 21:21:59

What do you mean you never liked Asics - that is some kind of heresy! On this occasion I will agree with Sasha, run easy, a couple miles or so. But just take it easy. Remember how long it took you get good in high school - 4 years of solid running! Now add to that the fact the you haven't run for 2 years. Take it easy and build up slow. By the end of summer you will be able to handle solid and consistent 70-80 mile weeks.

From Dustin on Wed, May 21, 2008 at 00:41:43

Hey Joe

First welcome to the blog! I work with your dad at the intermediate school and I told him about the blog a few months ago, glad you signed on and have been running with Karl.

Will have to get together sometime and get some runs in over the summer. I'll be training for the marathon also this summer and I'm planning on running between 70-90 miles a week.

We also have a good group that meets on Thursdays and Saturdays over in St. George at the St. George Running Center.

As far as the injury, I agree with Sasha and Dave see if you can still run but slow the pace way down.

Today went on a nice easy run with the McCombs boys. 6 miles counting warmup and cooldown. Probably around 7 min. pace I forgot to keep track. I need to get a watch but I hate wearing them. Behind my knee still feels funny right in the middle but I think it will just take some time to go away as long as I'm careful. Knees felt fine. Just felt a little sluggish and not very smooth but it will get better as I get more and more in shape and get some more miles in.

Angel Height's loop plus 2 laps warmup. I really need to find some other 5 mile loop. I'm sooo bored with Angel Heights. Anyway, felt really slow the first 4 miles, then the last mile I got rollin' and felt really good--too bad it wasn't sooner...but it was overall a good run. I'm not looking for too much speed this week so it's alright if I go slow. But I think I am starting to get back into shape for mileage little by little. Oh, and I think I am pretty much over that injury or whatever it was...will start easing into more mileage. I was being real careful this week and especially last week to not overtax it, but I've tested it out a couple of times the last couple of days and it feels a lot stronger, though not 100% yet. But soon....

Went 8.5 today w/ the XC guys...well, for like the first mile or so anyway...took it easy for the first couple to help them out and then got a good pace rollin. felt good today so I ran somewhat hard but not killer pace. Felt way good though. Especially for a monday. Looking forward to this week...especially the USG 10k on Friday...by the way, any hints on racing a 10k...strategy, pace, etc??...this will be my first one and actually the longest distance I have ever raced. But I am sooo stoked. I actually feel very good so far this week.

Joe, you should do great this Friday. I'm planning on running the race, even though I don't think I'm in as good as shape as I was last year. Last year I had a really good race and felt I ran pretty smart. If I remember most of the my splits were pretty equal. Anyway, it is a very fast course and sounds like there will be some good competition there, so expect some fast times.

From Karl on Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 00:33:37

Hey buddy! Sorry I didn't come run with you today. The 10k will be sweet! It's basically like a 5k road race, just twice as far, otherwise not much different. Just get into a nice pace and keep it. Anyway I'll probably come run with you some time this week.

From Hayden on Tue, Jun 10, 2008 at 10:42:21

Yea man i am doing the 10k this weekend we got to all push each other and i get to get 20 seconds or less to Dave Holt or beat him, so we will push each other. 10k's are the greatest too.

slow run around Hurricane Fields. Just tried to keep it easy to moderate even though the stupid wind was blowing. Felt pretty good although my legs were a little tired from yesterday. Will take it very easy tomorrow and then a little bit harder on Thursday to upswing into Friday's race.

Thanks for the advice by the way. I'm looking forward to a great race on Friday.

Well, for my first 10k ever I think I did alright... Started out too fast...first mile was 4:54ish so I cooled down after that a little. Didn't figure Holt and Hayden would start out THAT quick so I hung right around them that first mile. Felt pretty reasonable though so I just found my pace and stuck with it as best I could. 5k was still 15:50 which was surprising to me and very good news considering my current abilities (or lack thereof, compared to pre-mission). Last half of the race really sucked...the downhill combined with my old cross country waffles that I have decided are too small really started to hurt my feet and lower legs. The last 2 miles were excruciating. I physically could have run much faster but it just hurt so bad on my feet and stuff that I was practically jogging on some parts so I didn't run nearly as hard as I could have that last bit. But once I got on level ground with 800 or so to go I turned it on and had a good finish with too much left. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the whole bit. I was shooting for anything under 35 min. so that part was good...and my legs really didn't bother me as much as I expected so that is good too. I would really like to try a 10k on a more level course now...I think I could do better with that...and some new racers that are actually meant for road racing...if anyone knows of a good pair that won't bankrupt me let me know. Anyway. I'm gonna go ice now. Oh, and my toenails are now black...I kinda like the new look :P

ran 2 more miles this afternoon because my calves feel like rocks. felt better after and went and tried to play raquetball which was fun but painful :)

From Karl on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 17:58:29

Nice run! Yeah the downhill is hard on feet especially with old shoes. I wear brooks T4 racers for road races and I love them. I let Jeremy Jones and Ryan Howard borrow them a few times and they loved them too. Anyway, nice run for your first 10k. The Deseret News is downhill but not as bad as this one. Sorry I couldn't run with you guys.

I see good things to come... three must be your lucky # it's friday the 13th as well. My favorite day!!

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

So I have hardly been able to even walk all day...confined to hobbling around the house and hoping people would feel sorry for me. haha. My calves are super super sore. I think I've used more IcyHot in 2 days than the entire US Olympic team does in a month. I think it is just because of all of that downhill racing yesterday nearly jouncing my calves off of my fibula. If they fall off I will be very easy to identify, as I will be the only guy running around with no calf muscles.

Anyway, after lancing some of the hugest blisters I have ever seen, and in some weird places too (who knew you could get blisters under your toenails?!), I attempted a 4.5 mile run...which ended up being more like a 4.5 mile quick shuffle. I felt like I was one of those 80 year old men you see that are still running marathons and stuff. Hats off to them...but I hope by the time I have to run like that and feel like that all the time that I will be dead. But today was very painful. Hopefully it will start to feel better tomorrow when I rest, though I doubt I will be recovered by Monday.

But the good news is that the rest of me feels great for just having raced my longest ever race. Quads, hammies, etc all feel totally ready to go. I think I will be much better at it next time. I learned a lot on this race which was kind of its purpose so I'm looking forward to some great 10ks and hopefully a half if I can find one semi close, followed by the SGM.

Congrats to all who ran the 10k yesterday...it was a great race and lots of good competition.

Went on a long slow run today. After warmup I went with Johnny (trackstar532) for the first 2.5 miles then sent him off on a shorter loop and I went out past the Hurricane Airport a ways and back. Cooled down for half a mile or so after. Nice relaxing run. Calves are still pretty tight but they don't hurt too bad. Definitely better than yesterday. Blisters seem to be healing well. Good news: toenails don't hurt anymore...I think my foot is getting ready to jettison the big toenail on my right foot...its all sorts of pretty colors and has lifted itself almost out of it's little socket there and my toe is still all swollen. It only hurts if I put pressure on it, I think the nerve has died so it really doesn't hurt to stand or run on it. yay! (I think) I'll probably keep my other big toenail :) But overall a good run today.

Man, today was a long day. First got up @ 5 am like usual and went to work at the pallet yard and worked all day...but then they wanted me to stay and help load a semi full of woodchips so I did that and by the time we got done it was 6:30 pm. Talk about a long day. wow. I was so tired...and I really just wanted to shower and eat and go to bed but I went running anyway. 8 miles pretty easy because I really just didn't feel like working too hard. But I got a pretty good pace going towards the middle of the run anyway. avg about 7 minute miles. Almost an hour total but not quite. Good run. Just trying to get in as many miles as I can without hurting myself...which is proving to be quite a trick. But I'm feeling better and better all the time so that is good. I was thinking about it today, and I have decided that if I had the endurance that I had my senior year of High School, then I would be running way faster than I was then. Just a theory. So I think I am improving all the time. My goal is to hit 70+ miles per week by the time I move up to Logan on August 18...so about 2 months. I'm hitting about 45 or more this week so I think it is doable. Anyway, I'm going to bed. 'nite y'all.

Nice run today with the XC team. We actually got a good group out and so it was nice. Not just me and Johnny. Anyway, warmed up for .5 mile and then went 10:00 easy, 10:00 moderate, 5:00 hard, 10:00 easy. .5 mile cooldown too. Went really easy on the easy parts, got a good pace rollin on the moderate and went way fast on the hard...probably around 5:15 pace on the hard so it felt good to get out on my legs a little and fly. But it was only five min. so I wasn't tired at all. It was nice to get some pace variation today.

I have made a startling discovery too. Lately I've been wondering why I have no energy and seem to have a hard time with recovery and stuff. Well, I found the answer. I was counting up all of what I eat on an average day and I found that I am not eating NEARLY enough. I've only been averaging probably 1800 calories per day so it's no wonder I usually feel kind of drained and have a hard time healing. Especially when I'm running a lot and working my butt off at work for 8 hours a day. I do eat pretty healthy compared to most people, I just wasn't eating enough. So I tried an experiment today and ate an extra meal right after work and ate dinner just barely before bed instead of just before running, and I really tried to cram the calories and protein and complex carbs...and guess what...I felt way better today. Kinda makes sense that you gotta put gas in the tank if you wanna go very far in a day ;) I figure I should be eating at least 2500 or 3000 calories per day, especially when I get up around 60-70+ mpw.

Got up at 5 and ate a bagel and some Powerade...got ready to go and went to Kiwanis Park where the start is. Got all my stuff ready and warmed up for probably a mile or so with Karl and Hayden. Legs feel a little tired but not too bad considering my mileage this week. There's like 8 gajillion people in this race so me and Hayden (Karl ran the 5k) had to push our way up to the front. There were like 5 guys all dressed up as rednecks being punks and pushing everyone off the line...I contemplated pushing them over at the start but thought better of it...wished I had my track spikes on. he he he. Anyway, so gun goes off. We take off at a pretty fast pace but not as fast as USG. First mile was 5:02. Didn't have my watch so I asked someone and that's what I heard...anyway, the first mile was all uphill and a good bit of the second mile too...then there was a good downhill (the only one turns out) coming down University Pkwy so I dropped a couple of people there. Hayden and the lead pack left us by then but I was still in the top ten and feeling good. Turned onto University and it was pretty flat but I felt very good and got a good pace going and dropped one more guy. It was nice to have all those people there 'cause it motivates you not to slow down and look like a loser. Middle of the race was very solid for me which I was happy about. Felt like I kept much more even pace. Then we turned up center street and the rest of the course was all uphill. And it really sucked because then we started hitting all the 5k people that were slow and there were THOUSANDS of them...I think I ran an extra mile trying to weave in and out. haha. But they really need to separate the 2 races more...maybe different lanes or something. Lots of people complained about that. Felt pretty strong but hills and mobs of people slowed me way down the last 2 miles. Had to almost completely stop a few times to avoid killing people...maybe I should have anyway. Came into finish and never got a good kick because there were too many people and I couldn't get up any speed. But overall I was pretty happy with the race...everyone seemed to have run about 3 min slower than USG so I wasn't too disappointed about the time although it was very slow...I felt much better and I think if there weren't as many people I would have got at least 10-15 seconds faster than I did. So overall a good race and I'm excited for Des News in 3 weeks

Club run...7 miles easy pace...48 min so just a hair under 7 min. pace. Felt very good and probably could have gone the 10 mile loop, but I would probably regret that on Saturday when I go 15. Anyway, felt very good and it was nice to get out with the guys instead of just by myself.

8 mile run in the SWEETEST Louisiana-style thunderstorm ever...I mean it was POURING and lightning everywhere...it was awesome and one of the most enjoyable runs I've had in awhile.  I was soaked and ran thru all the rivers on the sides of the streets and got all muddy and just had a grand old time.  Moderate pace...about 6:40's.  Felt pretty good.

Long slow run today. 15 miles out past Sky Ranch and into the desert a couple of miles out and back.  Felt fatigued at first from yesterdays run, but as my body warmed up and figured out I wasn't going to give up I started feeling better...7:00 pace average exactly, with some variation.  First 2 miles were consistent and most of the rest of the run was too, but I got going pretty good towards the middle but the last couple of miles were a struggle, though I did manage to run the last one at 7 min. even.  Felt way good considering this is the longest run I've done since getting back off the mish...now lets see if I can recover from it :)  I should do fine as I have over 50 hours 'til the next time I run (mon. evening).  Exceeded my goal for the week, but not by too much, so that's good too.

Oh, and this will probably be my last blog for about a week...I'm going camping and exploring ghost towns out in the West Desert by Nephi with my uncle and cousin and my dad...but I will be running.  No access to a computer out there :)  Should be some sweet trails and I plan for 60 miles next week.

Good job this week. I actually passed you finishing up this morning. My wife drove me out past Sky Ranch to the end of the pavement and then I did a nice 9 mile run back to my house. I enjoy running out on that road and just like you I averaged 6:58, however that was only going 9 miles, I don't think I could have handled 15 this morning. I started at about 11 so I got a little hot toward the end. Have fun next week.

Great miles man, and great run today. You are really doing good and smart in easing into the high mileage. We need to go running more when you get back. Have fun on the camping trip and see you later.

Well, I obviously didn't get the mileage I was shooting for by a long shot this week.  :P  Didn't have nearly as much time as I thought I would have because we did a lot of traveling and stuff...but I did run as much as I could.  Kind of changed plans and took it as a taper/rest week.  Part of the reason I didn't run as much is because on Monday I went on this twelve miler and it got dark while I was out...anyway, I went to look at my watch and it was a good thing I did because it caused me to inadvertently sidestep a big ol' rattler that was coiled up in the middle of the road.  He buzzed at me and I got some good speed training in that night :)  But after that I was so jittery that I got lost because I was unfamiliar with the roads and almost didn't make it back to camp.  Long story short I decided it wasn't worth my life to try to run after dark anymore.  We saw probably 5 other rattlers during the trip and I didn't really relish the idea of meeting another one so I cut my runs to daylight hours only.  If I would have got bit there's a good chance I wouldn't be here today because we were a good 75+ miles on dirt roads from the nearest town and there's no way I would have made it probably.    But the rest of the trip was fun and adventurous.  I did climb Wheeler Peak which is the highest point in NV at 13000 feet and that definitely got my heartrate going.  I will just blog the total mileage for the week here on this day because I am too lazy to go thru each day.

10 miles today very slowly...quads are still very sore. Probably partly due to 12 yesterday, but I think that steep scramble down the mountain last week (in cowboy boots by the way :P) is still affecting me. Other than that felt much better than yesterday, though still not fabulous. Hopefully I will feel better still tomorrow and then feel really good for thursday.  It really sucks that I won't be able to go to Des News because I have to work on thursday.  I am very disappointed but perhaps that is best with the way my legs have been feeling this week.  And plus I don't want anything to get in the way of my mileage this week, though races haven't been a problem in the past for that.

Today was an excellent day for a change. Great finale to a less than desirable week. Hauled wood all day up on cedar mountain then came down and did some stuff with my friends so I didn't get to run until almost 10. But it was nice and cool and all the stars were out and I got a good pace in most of the way...especially towards the end I really got rollin. Bench Lake loop with some extensions 7 min mile average with some faster and some slower. This week has been kind of a downer, haven't felt good until today so it was nice to finish strong.  Got my goal for the week even though I felt like crap, which is a very positive thing for me.

really tired today. I think this week's faster pace, high miles, failing shoes, and a few late nights and early mornings all conspired against me today, so I went ahead and took it easy in anticipation of tomorrow's loooonnnng run that I am planning. Hopefully I'll be able to get some good rest tonight and have a good day tomorrow.

Oh, and I've got some questions about the marathon (i'm running the st. george marathon on oct. 8th i believe), so if anyone has any tidbits they would like to share please feel free:

Question 1: when do I start doing "speed" work and how much of it do I do? what types of workouts are good? I don't know what the heck I'm doing as far as the marathon goes so I don't even know if you really do speed...it's probably definitely not what I, being a former miler/2 miler, would call speed so if you've got advice I'm open.

Question 2: How do I taper for the marathon? What kinds of workouts should I do while tapering? do I totally cut the miles or just ease off a little or what? I'm planning on peaking out at 80 mpw the first week of sept or before...is that too much too late?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Woke up this morning and still felt terrible so I called in sick to work and went back to bed. Took some ibuprofen which seems to work much better than tylenol. Don't think it's strep (no fever since saturday) but called doctor anyway and he is calling in a prescription antibiotic or something.

Feel quite a bit better around noon. Ibuprofen plus amoxicillin seems to be helping. We'll see...if I feel good enough I may try to go on a very very easy run but that's still up in the air.

Still feeling quite a bit better. went on a 4 mile jog to keep things loose and stuff. Promised my mom I wouldn't even breathe hard so I didn't...that's how easy I ran. Anyway, I hope this is over tomorrow. My immune system seems to have taken a summer vacation this week. I think I've had about every symptom possible with the exception of upset stomach. I even discovered this afternoon that I have pinkeye. so that sucks. I'm gonna try my best with this week and just be happy with whatever I can get without killing myself. I'll try to have a positive race at the Fair Run this weekend so maybe that will help make up for things.

Got up at five and ate some rice with no milk and drove w/ Johhny down to the high school. Nobody was there yet at 5:45 so just started warming up. Ran about 2 miles of warmup and stretched and stuff. Talked to Karl and another kid that is running for Dixie State this year. Race started, took off with Karl and felt pretty good. Hung with him for about a mile then he really picked it up...I've got no speed in my legs...I was trying to run faster but just don't have any fast twitch or something going on. No speedwork at all since May I guess. Not abnormally tired, although this past week of being sicker than a dog may have been affecting me. Didn't lose any ground on him after about 1.5 miles and just kinda hung in there and make the most of it. Could hear the kid from DSC behind me and just tried to break him and get a gap on him. Worked pretty well as he wasn't within striking distance after the 2nd mile mark. Really turned it on with about 800 M to go...turned the corner and Karl had got some distance on me with his amazing amount of leg speed...couldn't do anything with that so just tried to kick as hard as I could...got going for a few seconds then breakfast started to knock at the door so I had to curtail my acceleration to try to keep it down until after the finish. Had no idea where DSC kid was so I didn't want to waste any time puking. But it didn't do any good because I lost it about 20 M out anyway. It's quite a trick to throw up while kicking it in and not get any on yourself...I was mostly successful in that attempt. But got across the line and heaved a few times and was fine after that. Note to self: 1.5 hours is not enough time in between eating and race...not in HS anymore--metabolism apparently isn't what it used to be :) Finished in 16:40...missing my HS PR for that course by 20 sec. if I remember right. Still a good time.

I forgot to start my watch until about 25-30 seconds into the race but here are my splits as far as I can guess:

5:17: Where the heck is my speed? not hurting at all, but first mile is usually 5 min or less.

5:25: A little tired but holding out well.

5:27: (had to guess this one, no mile marker) feeling pretty worn out and trying to get something faster going in the legs, but not happening.

:31 Feeling like puking and actually doing so.

Overall evaluation: All things considered: good race. good time. Splits were slow but pretty even. I'm happy with the whole arrangement. But I have no speed anymore...I guess that's what I get for running virtually nothing faster than 6:45 except on rare occasions. Will try to speed up my pace on my training runs because that is super frustrating. grr. Once I get the Marathon out of the way I'll be able to spend a little more time and energy on getting that together so I can actually run sub 5's for my 5k :) One thing I did notice though is that my endurance seems much better than previous races. Afterwards I felt like I could run the whole thing again. My legs were not even tired at all. The mileage must really be helping with that. This is a very good sign I think.

first run in a few days.  I don't know what was going on but I have been feeling really crappy for a long time.  I think I was still fighting that sickness.  I felt really good today though.  It was a nice day.  I ran in the afternoon when I was a little more awake.  Did a 2x200 m sprints up hills as part of my run.

I didn't have much time today so I had to cut it short.  I ran 6.5 pretty easy and went and found the track here and did 2x800 repeats without my watch.  Just worked on my stride and form.  Trying to work some more speediness into my running because I feel SOOO slow right now.  More mileage on Friday hopefully.  Felt good today though.  second good day in a row.  Maybe I've finally kicked whatever it was that had me down.  yaya!

9.5 pretty easy today.  Legs were a little sore from the 800's yesterday but just relaxed and felt pretty good.  Worked more on my form and posture and stride and got a pretty solid pace going thru the middle half of the run.  A few big hills.  Nice run today.

went on an easy/hard interval run today about 7.5 miles.  about 4 miles of that was 6 min pace or better.  the rest was easy.  then played some intense ultimate frisbee and we were good so we did a lot of running down the field for another 1.5 fast miles in short sprints.  Then went on a slow jog for 3 miles with my roomate and another friend.  So all in all today was a great day for running although I will probably be fairly sore tomorrow.  But I'm feeling more in shape and faster so I think I am improving and hopefully will  be in great shape for my first marathon in less than a month.

7.5 easy today.  legs were quite sore from yesterdays intensity but it felt really good.  I am finally feeling fast again and the altitude has stopped bugging me.  Ahhh...I hope this lasts.  I am feeling some freakishly fast 5ks and 10ks after the marathon.  but I'm excited for the marathon too...since that seems to be the coming of age for runners.  BRING IT ON!  haha.

wasn't going to push too hard today but I was feeling really good so I did a loop around First Dam and the Temple as fast as I could possibly do it.  almost 10k in 37 min (6:04/mi)...which is pretty darn good considering there are some huge hills and I wasn't in a race.  I was thinking it would make a pretty cool 10k course if you added another .1 on somewhere.  Anyway, felt really good and strong.  Really feeling a lot faster and hopefully I'll be able to put that into a good pace on the marathon and my endurance training will allow me to maintain it.  That's the plan.

Hmmm... well, not gonna lie this race sucked really bad.  started out too fast first of all trying to hang onto Paul and Cody at least for a little while and ended up running the first mile way too hard (even though by time it shouldn't have been that bad) resulting in the last half of the race being absolutely terrible.  I need to quit getting so excited and thinking I am back in high school and starting out like I'm gonna run a 15:45.  Plus for some reason my mental toughness is down the toilet right now and I have a hard time forcing myself to go hard at it when I'm feeling like crap.  So I just need to work on that...a lot.

On the bright side I met Paul, Cody and Jon today and am going to start training with them as much as I can.  It will be good to have other people to run with and motivate me and all that good stuff.  Plus they are all marathon gurus and full of sage advice on how to run St. George which is great considering I don't really know what to expect from the marathon.  Anyway, I'm looking forward to some good times with them. Oh, and my Aggies absolutely DESTROYED Idaho today so that was a plus to the day too.  :)  now if they can just win another one somewhere...

Nice job on the race today- we can relate to losing the high school speed and mentality (maybe that's why we do marathons- less speed needed!). It was nice meeting you yesterday- let me know when you want to train together.

From paul on Sun, Sep 21, 2008 at 16:27:16

It was good meeting you. Don't worry about trying to immediately recapture where you were 3 years ago. If you train smart and hard for the next year, it will all come back, and then some. It's hard to be mentally tough in a 5K unless you are running them frequently. I have trouble with that myself, since I only run a couple 5K's a year.

From Dustin on Tue, Sep 23, 2008 at 16:10:00

12 easy today on the Logan River Trail which Jon told me about.  It's a really sweet trail.  very shady and is a lot more interesting than the road.  The only problem was I kept running into packs of tourists that couldn't spreken ze inglis and had to keep stopping and try to get past or through them.  but it was a cool run.  Just took it easy and kind of coasted how I felt.  Got some good paces going on some parts but didn't ever really breathe hard.  Nice run today.  Well, I gotta go to trigonometry class and then study chemistry so I'm out.

Did you find the singletrack (1.4 miles long) past Third Dam?

From Predog on Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 02:18:08

I think so. I was on a single track a good share of the time. Next time I'm gonna go even further than I did. I think there was still a ways to go. there was also a Bridger Overlook cutoff that looked interesting but I didn't go up it. It was only like .8 miles. That is a sweet trail though. I will be spending some more time on it I think.

From Jon on Thu, Sep 25, 2008 at 09:01:55

There are 2 other good trails nearby. Green Canyon has 3 miles of singletrack in the main part, then connects to a huge singletrack network. Very nice. And there is a flat (but dirt) canal trail right by campus- easiest way to find it is to go to the SE corner of 400N and 600E and go into the parking lot of the red brick building. You will see a canal with a dirt trail headed east. 1.33 miles long.

This morning my legs felt really good after icing last night.  Left Logan today at about 11 and drove pretty much straight through to Hurricane except to eat lunch in Provo.  400 miles.  My legs were sore from sitting in the car for 6 hours, so after I went and got my chip and stuff I went on a short easy 3.5 miler with 2 easy 100m striders mixed in.  Legs felt a little better but not perfect so I iced again, but not for as long or as cold as last night.  They should feel great tomorrow.  I am sooo excited to run my first marathon.  I can just visualize myself not dying at the wall and crossing that finish line under 3 hours with a few minutes to spare!  I am pumped!  Hopefully it all goes to plan.  I am going to run the first 1/2 with the 3 hour group and hopefully come through at 1:30ish then just keep relaxing and gradually building until I get to Winchester Hills and then give it a surge and try to cut off some huge time with that big downhill into St. George.

Today was the day.  For now I'm just gonna say that I was VERY pleased with my marathon debut and I am officially hooked!  I had a freaking blast!  I think that was one of the funnest races I've ever done!  I felt good the whole time (well, up until about Mile 24) and it was just great!  2:53:43 is the official time...good enough for 50th place.  Don't yet know what my age division place was.  But I'm just tickled about the whole thing.  Thanks to Andy, (Riverton?) Paul, Matt (?) and everyone who was pacing together with us.  Y'all kept me from going out too fast, which, knowing me I would have done and definitely would have died.  And thanks to Paul Peterson, Cody, Jon, Dave and everyone else for all the great advice...it worked perfectly.  Great job to everyone!

Here's the play by play:  Got to the starting line about an hour before the race started and was a little nervous, wondering whether I had trained enough and all that jazz because the last month had been less than stellar as far as training goes.  Tried to keep warm and jogged around a bit.  Then went to the right corral after Holt told me I was in the wrong place.  Continued warming up with everyone.  Found Andy and a few others who were shooting for 3 hours.  Race started and was feeling pretty good but wondering if I could really keep it up for 26 miles.  Rainy and a little cold.  First mile was 7:05 if I remember right.  I kind of had to depend on Andy to know what the pace was because my watch for some reason stopped after 10 minutes...don't know if I hit the button accidentally or what.  I couldn't see the mile markers for awhile anyway.  Anyway, so not much eventful happened.  Just ran and kind of enjoyed the first half.  Enjoyed the wet weather...easier to breathe although my arms got frozen and hurt to straighten them out.  Veyo hill wasn't as bad as I expected.   Dammeron Valley was worse than I expected but I just relaxed and it went okay.  Hit the half in 1:31:08 and restarted my watch to get the last half split.  After the half mark I started feeling really good for some reason...highly irregular based on my training runs.  Held off for awhile but was really feeling like I could take off easily but I didn't want to do it prematurely.  Hit that big downhill coming into Snow Canyon around mile 15 and just let my legs open up and carry me down.  Gatorade at that stop was gross...not enough water mixed in.  Yuck.     Anyway, after that hill I just didn't feel like slowing down much and just started to fly.  I felt unstoppable.  I have no idea where that came from.  I am usually DEAD after 15 miles.  Just kept going and started passing people like crazy.  No one passed me after mile 15.  I was worried that I was going too fast but I felt so good I just kept going.  The hill at Winchester Hills couldn't even slow me down.  Passed a ton of people on that one.  Just felt great!  Runner's High.  Enjoying myself and having tons and tons of fun.  Just pretended that I was just starting out on my run and put the last 18 miles behind me.  Mile 22.5 my shoe came untied and had to stop and tie it.  I had to take a leak really bad too...maybe that's why I was going so fast.  Didn't want to stop and lose time.  Came flying down the hill into St. George and was still passing people like crazy.  Mile 23 still feeling pretty good...wondering where this "Wall" thing is...Mile 24:  found out where the Wall was.  OH MY HECK!  That hurts sooo bad.  I felt like my muscles were being torn off my legs at each stride.  Still keeping a good pace, trying to relax and not look like I am even working.  That helps me.  Mile 25:  I am DEAD...just trying to make it that last mile...still going strong and passing people though.  Mile 26:  Can see the finish and just want to be there instead of 300m away.  Trying to get a kick in and feeling like I'm sprinting my guts out although I probably didn't look like it.  Looked at the clock and realized I was going to destroy 3 hours.  Crossed the line, tried to celebrate and almost fell over.  I DID IT!!! Legs feel like wet noodles and I have to go to the bathroom but can hardly walk to the porta-potties.  Went and ate some cantaloupe and got a massage and commenced freezing to death.  Negative split the last half marathon by 8:35 (if my math is right) in 1:22:35 don't know where I got that but I'll take it!  Anyway, very happy with the race and I'm gonna do it again!  2:45 here I come!!

Paul, thanks for pacing with me that first 15 miles or so...And Holt, yes it was my senior distance coach! ;) You are one of my running idols! Jon, thanks for the pacing advice...everything went exactly according to plan and even better. Thanks again and look forward to seeing y'all in some more marathons.

From Andy on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 23:44:11

I really appreciate you running with me during the first 15 miles. You kept my pace honest and I know I would not have been on target if you weren't there. You have a tremendous amount of potential. I know that you were really holding back and were anxious to go but you ran a very smart first marathon. I have to ask if the pacing advice that Jon gave you was "stick with the slow guy we helped at TOU until the half then let it rip and leave him in the dust".

From Predog on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 23:56:34

No actually he didn't even mention you specifically...he and Cody just said to go with the guys that were shooting for 3 hours, run the first half conservatively, and then see if I could take off around Winchester Hills. And ditto on the thanks...I know for a fact that I would have run waaaay too hard the first half if you wouldn't have been there so it goes both ways.

From Jon on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 00:25:15

Andy, your comment made me laugh! Partly because I thought it said "Ogden marathon" rather than TOU- sounds like Joe did the same thing to you yesterday as I did at Ogden!

Just consider yourself a good motivator to others, helping them to run good ends to marathons :)

From Jon on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 12:55:55

8:35 negative split? Wow- shows how much more you can do next time. As for the wall- yup, hard to describe until you experience it. Good you went out slow rather than too fast (hitting the wall sooner, like mile 18-20, maes for a very long race...)

From cody on Mon, Oct 06, 2008 at 23:52:35

Joe - Now you have the first one under the belt, you will be ready to push it and test the wall. We had better watch out.

Andy - Nice one! Better stop being so good at even pacing. You will not be used as a good example anymore.

Went running today!  Yay!  okay, it was a jog.  5 miles and I don't think I've ever run 5 miles that slow.  Walked up the hills so I don't stress out my muscles and get injured.  My legs are still shot.  Absolutely no "umph" in them.  They don't hurt...they are just blah.  But it was good to finally get out and enjoy some great running weather.  Oh, and I just found out today that I was 5th in my age division and they have a plaque for me that mi padres are going to pick up.

3 easy easy today.  Legs are still dead tired but not as bad as yesterday.  first 2 miles felt fine but the last one was a chore so I just jogged it.  Ran up a hill and felt tired but not like I was gonna tweak anything so hopefully that's a good sign.  It was cold today too.  Had to wear a beanie and my new long sleeve SGM shirt.  So how long does this recovery thing usually take anyway?

It will take a couple of weeks to recover and feel back to normal. The rule of thumb is 1 day for every mile that you raced. It looks like you are doing the right thing and playing it smart.

About 10k super easy again today.  Legs felt pretty good.  I actually maintained effort (which wasn't much) up a hill today instead of pretty much walking and it didn't hurt.  Still, not gonna push anything for awhile.  I've got all the time in the world to rest up so I'm gonna.  This is the longest I've gone since the race and I felt good.  Legs are still sluggish and you can hear me coming a mile away because I clomp like a horse when running instead of being light and springy like usual.  Oh well.  I guess that's what happens when you do crazy things to your body like running marathons.  haha.

Oh, and today we had our first snow.  When I woke up at 10:15 (heavenly!) there was about an inch on the ground and coming down fast.  But it cleared up and melted off.  We are supposed to get more tomorrow and tonight.  But it was FREEZING today!  I am gonna die up here!  Like it was as cold today as the coldest days in the middle of January back home...and it's only October!  ugh.

No running today.  My feet have really been hurting me since saturday.  It's on both feet so I don't think it's an injury (unless I am very unlucky) but I figured I'd play it safe and avoid injury since I'm probably very prone to it for the next few weeks.  The bottoms of my feet underneath the 5th metatarsal feel sore and stressed.  Also the front outside of my ankles feel like the muscles and tendons in there are pretty torqued.  No idea why unless it was because of playing dodgeball until 1 AM on saturday.  That may not have helped.  Hopefully I'll feel less fragile tomorrow.

12 mile fun run up and down mountains with Jon and Cody.  Lots of climbing...like over 2000 feet worth.  We went on the Ephraim's Grave trail to where some guy killed a huge grizzly bear that was 9'11'' tall (they had a rock set up that was as tall as the bear, and lemme tell ya, that's a big ol' bear)  And there was a paper there with a story about how the guy shot the bear and blood was squirting out of it's mouth or something.  Cool story.  Then we came back down the mountain via Steel Canyon trail which was fun and I almost died about 3 times tripping.  One time I jammed my finger on this big rock while trying to avoid smashing my face against it.  We saw quite a few hunters and they all stared at us with a look somewhere between disgust, hatred, and incredulity....the disgust/hatred because we were scaring the deer and the incredulity because we were running up these huge mountains out in the middle of nowhere with nothing but short shorts, 2 thin shirts, and a water bottle.  Anyway, very fun run.  And we ended up beating the "9 minute guy."  Cody and Jon run with imaginary friends and I guess I am one of them too since I decided to take up plumbing and hit the campaign trail with John McCain and I have shrunk to 3.5 inches tall.  I'm surprised I can keep up with them anymore since my stride has gotten so short.  Must be the weight I lost in the process.  Anyway, good day today and I felt pretty good the whole time.  Good elevation training without killing myself.

Went and watched Karl and Hayden at State XC today...that was a nice break from the monotony of school.  ;)  They both did really well with the cards they were dealt even though neither got what they were hoping for...but they are champions in my book and I think everyone knows it.  Anyway, so I spent half an hour total sprinting from one part of the course to another and hollering at the top of my lungs.  Probably a total of 2 miles really fast.  Nothing hurt either so that's a good sign.  Jogged a little when I got back but I had tons of studying to do so didn't get much mileage in for the day.  That's okay, I wanted today to be easy.

6 miles easy to moderate today.  Legs were a little tired from yesterday's hard run, but the good news is they didn't have that dull, achy, I-just-ran-a-marathon feeling so I think I am starting to recover nicely.  I felt really good though other than that today.  Felt smooth and relaxed and the pace felt fast but effortless.  Not plodding anymore either.  I actually have some lower leg strength again!  haha.  OH! and I hit a milestone today...1000 miles (actually 1003.1) in just under 6 months since I joined the blog on April 27th of this year.  Woo Hoo!  that only works out to roughly 6.5 mi/day over 155 running days (counting sick days and days I didn't run, but not Sundays), but you gotta realize I spent a good deal of that time trying to get in shape after 2 years of not running at all, so I figure that's pretty dang good!  Yeah!  Maybe I'll go get some Aggie Ice Cream as a reward...okay maybe not, but I'm happy about this.  Lets see if I can do like 2300+ for the year (ending in April).

Today I went on another beastly trail run up a mountain with Jon and Cody. We also had another newcomer to our little group named Lisa.  Anyway, we drove partway up Blacksmith Fork Canyon and ran a trail called Leatham Hollow  up to the top of Millville Canyon then took a road for a couple more miles past a couple of deer hunters and one very stuck Land Rover.  Good run with lots of climbing:  3400 feet total elevation gain over 6 miles.  12 miles total.  Coming back down was a bit rougher than last week but only because of the last couple of miles which was in a dry creekbed full of ankle breaking rocks, one of which I had the good fortune of kicking into my shin which felt great.  Feet, ankles, and knees felt a lot better than last week though.  Ground was a bit softer.  Got down to the bottom and iced my feet in a freezing cold little river.  Felt wonderful.

Well, I only meant to go 12 today but I didn't realize it was 3 miles from my apartment to the Green Canyon trailhead instead of only 2 like I was thinking.  So I ended up running 14 today.  Felt really good though.  I went slow the first half because my calves were a little fatigued from all that climbing on saturday and it was all uphill going out but I got feeling pretty good near the top and decided to go hard coming back down.  Got some great speed going on the way back especially once I got back on the road and didn't have to worry about where to put my feet.  Last 3 miles or so were good pace for a hard tempo run.  It only felt like 12 instead of 14 but the course tool says otherwise.   Oh, and I just got a call from my dad and he says that I got a letter from SGM saying that they made a mistake and I ended up taking 4th in my age division instead of 5th!  So that is way cool...don't know if it's affecting my overall place but hey, they sent me a new brass plate to put on my little plaque so that is all cool.  Anyway, so good day, good mileage, beautiful weather, legs feel awesome...yeah, it's a good day.  :)

Last night I went to bed at 2:15 AM.  Got up at 8:30 and didn't feel tired at all which was amazing.  Got ready and went down to the park to get warmed up etc.  Warmed up just jogging around and doing some small striders and stuff.  Legs feel pretty good.  A couple of small sore spots but nothing of concern.

Started the race feeling like the pace was really easy.  Didn't bring my watch because a) I think I left it at home (in Hurricane) and b) I just wanted to run by feel anyway.  Legs felt fine for the first 2 miles and I was running with this guy who seemed very fast.  He said he knew some bloggers too.  We were way out in front.  One other guy was behind us a bit but no one for a long way after that.  He was going for under 35 too which was kinda what I was hoping for too so I determined to stick with him.  Unfortunately, those dreams were short lived.  I don't know whether it was the marathon still in my legs or excessive mileage earlier in the week but my legs just kinda shut off after about two miles and he pulled away and built up a big lead by the time I hit mile 3.   About mile 3 I got passed by the guy who was a bit behind us but I got my stuff together and stuck on him.  Still trailed by about 3-5 seconds but didn't let him build any lead to speak of.  He turned out to be a very good front runner.  I would surge to try and get him but by the time I would catch him my legs would be dead again and he would pick it up and get his lead back.  This happened 5 or 6 times the whole last half of the race.  Almost got him at 1.5 to go, but I wasn't as familiar with the course as I should have been and it just kept making turns and making turns and I was wondering when the heck it was going to end and my legs kept doing this surge-sputter thing.  Last .5 mile he has a good 15 second lead but I tried to kick it pretty hard and cut it down to about 9 or 10 seconds by the finish.  Ended up 3rd with 35:29:14, so I didn't get any of my goals but I did PR by over a minute (not counting USG) so I'm satisfied for now.  I think I kind of redeemed myself from the TOU 5k as well...felt much better about my time and mental state.  I didn't let the guy get away from me hardly at all and I was in the race the whole way.  Pretty happy about it.  Will probably jog a couple more miles today.  That later.

11 easy to moderate pace.  Legs felt great today!  Ran down to First Dam where my FHE group was doing FHE and watched them freeze their butts off by jumping in a 35-40 degree lake (in 45 degree weather) while re-enacting the "Iron Rod" story.  I used the fact that I was in the middle of a run as an excuse not to do something that stupid.  It was funny...there was definitely some language that will need to be edited out of that one.  haha.  Anyway, ran down the last half of the First Dam 10k course, up River heights and then east to that one road and out through Providence.  Was headed to Main, but then I had the misfortune of running into a couple of other old reprobates crazy enough to run in the dark and stormy night...namely Jon and Cody.  ;)  Ran with them all the way back to campus on part of the route I came and that was it.  Nice run.  A little chilly and rainy towards the end but it felt really good.  Had a good strong pace most of the way.  Hovered around 7 min. averaging maybe slightly under 7 min pace.  I think winter is starting to be here.  :(

it's under shoe manager on the left side in the pink menu. You just enter your shoe name, how many miles you have right now and hit update and after that it automatically asks you how many miles on what shoe and updates it for you. It's really cool I think...lots less work. :)

Easy for 8 miles, Bonneville Trail down to First Dam, along Canyon Road to and out around the First Dam 10k Course to Merlin Olsen Park, up past the Temple and back through campus.  Last 2 miles hit tempo run pace just to get a workout but felt very good.  Weather was pretty cold again but I was dressed for it so it wasn't bad.  Great run today.

North Logan/Main/4th North Loop.  8.6 mi. hard pace.  6:30 or better pace the whole way.  Legs got tired heading up 4th North but other than that they felt very strong.  I like running down Main because I can look at myself in all the windows and make sure that my form looks good and stuff.  Tried to work on that today.  It was a cold one today...didn't get out til after dark.  I hate this daylight savings time...I don't think it actually saves any daylight.  :P  Good run though so I'll survive.

Met Jon at the start of the Canal Trail then ran up to the River Trail start where we picked up Paul.  Easy pace but my legs were a little fatigued for some reason...no problem though.  Went almost to the G-something Campground and came back.  15 miles.  Felt good but I was ready to be done when we were done.  Longest run since St. George.  Weather was beautiful...a little chilly but being dressed warm it wasn't too bad...plus I think I am starting to get used to the cooler temps...still 30 or 40 degrees to go though.  :P  oh well.  Good day today.

Got in a great workout today in spite of Hurricane-esque winds.  Ran 5 miles to Merlin Olsen Park and back up to the field house where I did some weight training for the first time in a long time

Leg Extension:  3x15 @ 105 lbs.

Leg Flexor:  3x15 @ 90 lbs

Glute Flexor:  3x20 @ 110 lbs

Calf Raises:  3x15 w/ 2x35 lb dumbells

Jumping exercise:  3x15 @ 70 lbs

Hip Adductors:  3x15 @ 90 lbs

Hip Abductors:  3x15 @ 90 lbs

Also did 4x200m on the track at about 00:30 apiece.  Jog in between.  Cooled down for another mile or so back to the apartment.  Great workout today!  Felt good to get some strength and speed training in.  It's been awhile and I will probably be super sore tomorrow.  Yay!

Oh, and incidentally I weigh in at 140 lbs even with shoes and clothes on.

I am responding too your reply to my post. It would be great to get together, I am not as fast as you but shouldn't hold you up much.

I don't know if you remember me from the first Dam race. Lets figure out when we could get together. Anytime in the morning would be fine. (Hope not to early)

yeah, I remember you from First Dam. And not to early for me as well...it's vacation! It shouldn't get hot down there this late in the year so we're probably good whenever. You are talking about the Friday and Saturday right after thanksgiving right? I'm not going down 'til this coming tuesday.

We could meet there at the track or something...whatever time that works for you should be fine...I don't have any serious plans in the mornings. Just let me know when you find out what your plans are or whatever. I'm pretty flexible. my email is trackstar431@gmail.com if that's more convenient for you.

Well, it's been an interesting morning.  I was supposed to go running with Holt, Logan, and some of the other St. George guys this morning so I got up on time and drove to what I believed to be the designated meeting spot here in Hurricane...the Canal Trail trailhead.  Problem was, there are 2 trails that are sometimes called the Canal Trail.  I picked the wrong one.  The right one was one that I usually refer to as the "Rim Trail."  I was wondering what Holt was talking about when he said something about two towers.  By the time I remembered that there were two radio towers near the start of the Rim Trail and that that was probably where they were it was already 8:00...half an hour after I thought they would be there.  So I drove like a bat out of hell up to there and discovered that they had already left.  I figured they had a 3+ mile lead on me so I booked it up the trail as fast as I could go and cut off all the switchbacks, hurdling brush, yucca, and cactus as I went and praying that I wouldn't break my ankle or neck.  Got back on the trail and was able to find some footprints and determine that I was indeed on the right trail and very behind.  I knew because last time Logan ran with us I noticed that he had the same shoes as I do, and I also know that Holt usually runs in Asics.  Anyway, so I spent the next 7 or 8 miles trying to make up the distance and hope that I would catch them at some point, and also using my tracking "skills" to try and determine which turnoffs they took.  I must have got lucky because about 9.5 miles out I ran into a couple of bikers who said that they were a half mile ahead.  Turns out they sucked at judging distance because at several places I could see at least that far ahead and didn't see a soul out there.  So I kept going on the Jem Trail, crossed the Sheep's Bridge road, and continued.  Long story short, I never caught them a little after crossing the road I decided that they probably had a car waiting at the other end, would get there long before me and leave me stranded and too tired to run back out in the middle of the boondocks.  So I determined to cut my losses, get back to Sheeps Bridge road, run to the highway and back down the highway on a very narrow shoulder in 60 mph traffic back to the trailhead.  I almost died about 4 times, got tons of burrs in my socks, scratched my legs up a bunch and made it back in one piece.  So that is my adventure.  Sorry guys...I hope you had fun on your run!  I did.  Oh, and I just noticed Logan's comment on my blog about meeting at Maverick...that would have probably worked...haha.  I'll be back down in 2 weeks for Christmas break so we'll have to try again then...and I'll try to get to the right place.

Sorry Joe, I knew that we had those two runs out there - the canal that went along the canal that we would always run, and the rim (but I remembered that the trailhead up top has a sign that says "canal" so that's why I called it that). My bad. Sorry to miss you; I am sure you were running much faster than we were! Have a safe drive back up to school and see you at Christmas.

8 easy today.  The last week or so has been absolutely crazy with studying for my finals which are this week and stuff.  This week actually will be a little less hectic.  I will try to remember what runs I did last week but it was kind of hit and miss.  Today I just had an hour so I did a quick 8 and called it good.  Then it was back to ex. secretary stuff and studying for my chemistry final which I really need to do good on.  The snow was nice though...for some reason I have always enjoyed running in the snow.  maybe it's just because it's such a novelty for us southern runners.  haha

Did a half mile warmup down to the track and met up with Scott Ensign and another guy...can't remember the name for some reason...I raced him at First Dam, but I'm having a brain Please follow Fast Running Blog policy regarding vulgar language ..too many oxidation state rules I guess in there so no room for names.  But we decided to do 4 mile repeats at 5:30.  The first one we went too fast on and did 5:13 and after that it really sucked because 1) I haven't done a real speed workout for months, and 2) I made the mistake of eating 2 huge bowls of cereal like 45 minutes before we started the workout, so long story short I would get about 2 laps down and then start feeling like I was gonna puke...so it turned into an 800m repeat workout after that first mile.  I was pretty consistent on them though...all between 2:40 and 2:45.  Slow, but consistent and I suppose that is to be expected for the first speed workout in so long.  2.5 mile cooldown.  going to probably hit another couple easy miles tonight if I can find the time.  Chemistry final tomorrow.
