you should switch your major to BIOCHEMISTRY!!!!

oh well, you still need that calculus and physics even for that.

From Predog on Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 01:38:05 from 174.23.184.196

No, I've had enough of chemistry for now. haha. I'm actually toying with switching my major to physics though.

physics? you're kidding, right?

haha. Well I'm not sure really, but it's a thought I've thrown around lately. Mostly just a backup plan.

This week was a little tough motivation wise and a good share of the time I just did not feel like running at all.  The cold didn't help at all.  BUT, I got out and battled through it and got in a solid run every single day, and today I was rewarded with the best run I've had in months.  Felt wonderful.  My legs felt smooth and it just felt effortless.  I could have run forever today.  Great week all things considered.  Best in months.  Broke 50 for the week.

Nice evening run to Hyde Park via 16th East and back via 8th East.  Enjoying this "warmer" weather.  I've discovered one of my favorite things is watching snow melt.  I just feel like bursting into an evil, maniacal chortle ever time I see that cursed stuff running down the road in a stream of runoff.  Anyway, nice run.  Cache Valley sure looked beautiful today.  Great week, breaking my goal of 55 miles pretty easy.  Feels really good to be getting in some good mileage again.  It's been quite awhile.

you want to run the freeze your buns 5K with me tomorrow? 9AM at Logan High. I will run some additional miles to get about 13-14. We could do a warmup ahead of time, and cooldown after. email me if you are interested, or just post and we can work out a plan.

Scott emailed me last night about a "Freeze Your Buns" 5K here in Logan, and it was only $10 so I thought what the heck.  Got up early (for a Saturday) at 7 ate a banana and got all my warm clothes together and stuff.  Weather applet on my desktop said it was 8 degrees.  I guess it just means that Scott and I were more manly today than Jon, Cody, and Paul.  ;) haha.  Scott graciously gave me a lift down to the start at Logan High, since my car won't start.  Got signed up and got my free beanie (I figure a race, beanie, and food was a bargain).  Jogged the course with Scott.  Nice and flat except for a small uphill near the end of the loop.  According to Scott's GPS the course was pretty accurate.  Not very much competition, which is understandable given the cold and the low key nature of the race.  Start was very abrupt.  Took off and was in the lead right from "Go!"  No one really challenged me in this race, so I just kind of set a good pace but tried not to kill myself, as Scott and I were planning another 8 miles directly after the race.  Legs were pretty tired as expected due to the mileage this week, but it wasn't too bad.  Very cold air.  Kind of hurt my lungs, but not as much as I thought it would.  The cold was probably worth a good 30 seconds at least on my time though, plus I have done zero speed training in recent history.  Finished about a minute ahead of second place--a high schooler who just barely outkicked Scott.  FRB went 1 and 3.  Scott beat his longtime nemesis as well, so it was a good race for him I think.  After the race we went inside and stretched out a bit and I got some Gatorade and a half slice of bread.  Didn't really stick around for the awards, since it was just ribbons.  Took off on a run from the school down to Planet Walk and out by ICON and 10th West.  Doubled back for 7.9 miles for the run.  14.1 for the day.  Race time was okay.  Satisfactory for that temperature, the fact that I haven't done speed work in forever, the short notice and consequently worn out legs (although I probably wouldn't have rested for it anyway at this point).  Always nice to get the win though.

Jon, yeah you've got that 100 miler under your belt. I think that trumps winning the "Freeze Your Buns" 5k where 30 people showed up. haha.

Scott, haha yeah. Thank you for letting me know about it. It was nice to get a little race in to tell me where I'm at and to mix up the mileage a bit. It was also nice to run with someone for once.

Easy run, but legs feel trashed still.  Not so much the muscles, but joints and tendons all feel very fatigued.  Feet, ankles, and knees especially.  This started to build last week but it seems that yesterday's rest did nothing.  Last week I was debating on taking this week easy and it looks like that's what I will do.  Today was a test run, and my legs didn't pass.  Probably shoot for around 45 miles this week and then hit it hard again the first week in March.  This is okay though, because I've got until around June before I want to run another marathon, so I'm in no rush considering what I've been able to get done to date.  Better to remain injury free and take a 20 mile cut for one week than to get hurt and be able to do little to nothing for 2 weeks or a month.  I'm already at 60 miles per week, so I'm not complaining.

Skipped yesterday because of homework, and was barely even able to find time to get out today.  Even that took a stroke of good luck.  But anyway, I did get out and after a mile or so I just thought "Hey, why don't I push the pace a little bit, since I can't go long anyway." So I pushed it to about CV pace for about 3.5 miles.  Felt nice.  Cooled back down the last mile and called it a day.

How much were you sinking in versus staying on top? I may have to try Green next week.

From Predog on Sun, Mar 07, 2010 at 14:00:05 from 174.27.134.205

It wasn't too bad. Once you get done with the first part of the single track it's better to stay on the road where it's packed down by the skiers. The snow is still a good couple of feet deep. You won't sink in too much, but it is kinda soft and slippery. It looked like there was starting to be some melting going on so I don't know how that would affect it.

From Jon on Mon, Mar 08, 2010 at 19:41:05 from 75.169.140.238

Most years, some melts quick, some freezes over, and some stays snowy. Big variety.

Today started out as one of those runs where you feel completely disembodied and you just can't get anything going any better than a slow plod.  But I just let it go and after a few miles I was able to get my mind back in control and the rest of the run went smoothly.  Put in a few pushes, similar to last Tuesday's workout.  But not as many or as long.

Easy run.  Didn't need a huge amount of miles today, but still wanted to get a decently long run in.  Legs are tired and need some rest.  Tomorrow I will be traveling most of the day down home for Spring Break so I will just run a few miles before I leave and that should give me the rest needed.  Have a big long run planned for Saturday again.

Long slow run out through the desert.  Nice weather for the first half and then it started raining.  I was ok with the rain.  It smells nice.  But then the temperature dropped 20 degrees and my hands got frozen and then I got tired.  But all in all it was a nice run.  Nice to run somewhere other than the streets of Logan.  I think this is also my longest training run to date.  We'll see how fast I can recover because my legs are pretty dead.  My recovery times have been improving recently, however.

Big Workout #1

Ran from my house over to the HHS track at a slow warmup pace.  Got on the track and did 6x800m at a little faster than my 10k pace.  Was going to go a little slower, but whether it is the thick air or nice weather or what, I don't know, but I felt totally comfortable at about 5:30 pace.  We'll call it a "target" 10k pace.  400 meters recovery pace between each interval.  Here are my splits:

2:36--a lot faster than I was expecting for the effort

2:44--more in the range I wanted

2:43

2:44

2:40 this one took a lot more effort.  Felt like puking the last lap.

2:49  Took about everything I had.

Took a minute after the intervals to stretch my calves out.  They felt very tight.  Muscles in my right shin also felt pretty tight.  I think it's just a matter of not being used to this kind of workout.  Got going on a run to finish out the miles for the day.  Started off slow until I got my legs back, and then increased my pace to about marathon effort for another 4 miles and then slowed back down to normal.  It was a very nice warm day for running.  I took my shirt off once I got out of town on my run.  (I waited that long so I could avoid blinding any unsuspecting motorists with my brilliant white torso)  Excellent workout today, but I am tired.

Long run.  Started from my house then got on the Canal Trail, then took the connector up the cliffs to the Rim Trail.  Followed that to the Virgin Dam Trailhead (near Virgin) and then followed the JEM Trail and Sheeps' Bridge roads out to Highway 59.  Crossed the highway and continued out to Diamond Valley Ranch and then to the H Road behind the H back to the highway, and back into town and home.  I was really dragging by the time I crossed the highway, but once I got a mile or so down the H road my body must have switched to fats or something because although I was still really tired my legs just all of a sudden started working again, almost on their own.  Finished the run at a pretty good pace.  Got a little sun as well. Quite pleased with my longest training run ever.

whew! That 20 miler on Saturday really took it out of me!  Not that I expected to blow it off like nothing, but today I was still just dragging.  The good news is my legs didn't really hurt like yesterday...I just had zero drive and everything was still sluggish and tired.  I was going to try for 10 today, which is definitely less than normal for a Tuesday, but after about 3 miles I decided to pack it up and call 8 miles good enough.  Don't want any injuries.  Knees, ankles, and hips have definitely felt the mileage, but I think it's getting better over time, especially where I'm planning to plateau on the mileage until school's out at least.  Use this week to recover a bit and then focus on quality until summer comes around and I (maybe) have a little more time.

what is the status of river trail- how much of it is clear of snow?

From Predog on Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 13:12:41 from 174.27.134.205

It's not too bad. The double track still has some snow in some places, but it's just spotty. Most is melted. The single track has a little more, especially when you get into the trees and stuff, so it's a little more ticklish but not too bad still. All of it is pretty packed. I expect most of what is left will be melted in the next few days if the weatherman is right.

Weather was miserable. Windy and dusty with just enough rain so that I won't be able to see out of my windshield because of the dirt stuck on it.  Also, my throat has been really scratchy and cruddy the last couple of days.  Hope it's just the dust from the wind blowing, and that I'm not coming down with something.  Pretty blah today, but got the workout in.  Figure my body should get used to doing this regularly.  Very hilly run.  Ran from my apartment to First Dam, then along Canyon Road to Merlin Olsen Park, and then up through River Heights into the mouth of Dry Creek Canyon.  Going out was where my intervals took place, so the last couple were up some pretty good hills.  First couple were more or less on a slight downhill.  Coming back I rested for a few minutes and then put it on marathon pace and hit cruise control until a couple miles out and then cooled down the rest of the way.  Hard workout.  Hopefully it helps me get faster.

I actually had no idea that civilians could run in it. Perhaps if I would have known that I would have planned for it. As it stands I highly doubt I could break 16:40 which means I'd probably get lapped about 14 times in a 12.5 lap race--and that's if my legs were fresh. But I will try to be there to watch Paul and Ruth at least.

From Jon on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 00:12:43 from 75.169.142.62

16:40? That's my PR, almost. I definitely better not run.

Civilians? I guess that's one way to put it. They must be teaching you college students different than they did me, though- unless you're in ROTC.

From Predog on Thu, Apr 15, 2010 at 00:34:13 from 174.27.183.108

well the 16:40 just came from the only other time I did a 5k with anything like the training I'm doing now, and that's not saying I could even do that.

as for civilians, I couldn't think of a better word at the moment. Non-athlete? That doesn't make much sense either..at least I hope not!

I also analyzed my diet today on a whim.  Here are my findings.  Total caloric intake: 3179 calories. Medium Workout #1

Jogged half a mile up the hill to the Fieldhouse, then did another half mile warmup

4x800 m (400 m rest between intervals, along with a half mile warm up and cool down on the track before and after)

2:32

2:35

2:40

2:35

Didn't actually hit 5:00 pace, but I am satisfied with what I was able to do.  This was kind of a test to see what I am capable of speed-wise.  With more practice this will get easier.  My goal now is to run at least one speed/pace workout every week, even if it's not technically a "Big Workout."

Finished with a loop out by Macey's and back. Running outside the Fieldhouse totaled 8.6 miles.

I always forget how easy it is to run at 3000 feet.  Went out for an easy 7 miles and ended up going fairly fast even though I wasn't even breathing hard at all.  I had to keep slowing myself down because this was supposed to be a recovery day.  Passed 2 cops on 700 West.

Big Workout #3

I had a really great workout today.  I'm calling it the best I've had all year.  Here it is:  Warmed up by jogging up to the Fieldhouse, then did another half mile on the track.

5x1000m, Goal pace: 3:25 (5:30/mi.), 400m recovery

3:23

3:24

3:26

3:26 (left calf got really tight at the end, so I took an extra 200m recovery and stretched it out a bit)

3:20 (after this one I realized that I could probably have pushed the other 4 a little harder, but no harm done)

cooldown/recovery

Finished the workout with a 9.8 mile tempo run at 6:11/mi.

Thanks guys. Well the wind wasn't as bad when I was going against it out in Providence as when I was coming back on Main. I guess being closer to the mountains made a difference. Plus, it was right when it was starting to pick up so it was definitely a bigger wind when I had it at my back, so it probably helped me.

Yes, I'm staying in Logan. Trying to find a good job right now, but I do have an apartment and everything.

Your workout yesterday was nuts. Impressive nuts, but still nuts. You're in great shape.

If you're staying in Logan this summer and want to try a fun race, you could join Cody and myself at the Logan Peak Run! It's filling up fast.

From Predog on Thu, Apr 29, 2010 at 02:11:43 from 174.27.205.233

I think the stars just aligned yesterday. It was one of those rare days where you just feel like you can keep going forever as fast as you want. Plus I had the wind at my back for the last half of the tempo part of it, so that's probably cheating. Anyway, I was actually planning on doing Logan Peak. It sounds like a lot of fun. I probably need to get on that then.

Big Workout #4

This was another quality workout.  I think I am getting used to this type of training and the faster paces.  I'm getting a sense of how I'm going to improve it over time as well.  Here's today's workout:

1.5 mile warmup

4x1600m @ 5:30/mi.

400 m rest between #1 and #2, but that about killed me in #2 so I increased recovery to 800 m, but a little faster.  Here are my splits:

1
5:29
typical first interval, felt slightly labored but not bad
2
5:29
about died, increased recovery
3
5:28
much better.  getting into pace
4
5:26
felt almost effortless.  debated on doing another, but decided against pushing the limits too much...this time.

After the intervals and a little more recovery I got out and did about another 9 miles at 6:20 pace, plus a cooldown at the end.  Last couple of miles of the tempo run was a struggle, since the wind wasn't helping me today like last week, but overall I feel like I'm getting faster and stronger.  I am starting to feel as strong as I felt in high school speed wise (although I'm not doing the right training for HS races), and even much stronger in my endurance.  This may sound like excuses but I think I've finally kicked the 2 years of not running out of my mind and body.  I am now back to relishing hard workouts when I do them and being mature enough to rest when needed.  Feels much better than having to struggle just to find motivation to get out on a mediocre run.  Hopefully the trend continues.

Took it super slow today.  Possibly my slowest ever run since I was a wee laddie.  This run wasn't much more than a jog anyway.  But it felt nice to rest the legs because they were totally dead.  Picked up the pace just a little after about 3 miles of a torturously slow start and finished the run in good form.

1:00:05 (8:13/mi.)

Added a calorie counter to my blog today.  This is how many I am eating, not how many I am burning.  Going to see how much fuel I am consuming every day, just out of curiosity.

Always nice once you turn the corner training-wise.

That's a fun run- some hill, some fast. You should try going to the ridge all the way above wind caves!

From Predog on Sat, May 08, 2010 at 18:37:01 from 174.27.227.32

Do you just keep going past the cave to do that?

I did take a little spur off the main trail for a little bit this time that headed more along the face of the canyon instead of doubling back to the caves. One time I want to see where that goes, if it goes anywhere at all.

From Scott Ensign on Sat, May 08, 2010 at 20:14:24 from 65.100.253.227

Joe- listen very carefully- DO NOT listen to Jon for instructions on how to get to the ridge. Go look back at his and Cody's blogs for the entry where he and Cody got hopelessly lost heading for the ridge. it is all documented. I on the other hand can get you there safely. Just let me know when.

PS- no, it is not from the cave. it is the side trail on the right as you are going up maybe a mile back.

From Predog on Sat, May 08, 2010 at 20:28:01 from 174.27.227.32

ok yeah that's the trail I took for a little bit before I turned around. Does it hook on to something on the other side of the ridge? Like Green Canyon?

From Scott Ensign on Sun, May 09, 2010 at 00:42:54 from 65.100.253.227

yeah, as I remember it comes up on bierdneau somewhere and then you can run down the bierdneau trail into green canyon. I have hiked it before years ago but never run it. I still haven't done any trail running besides river trail.this summer lets do that one!

From Jon on Sun, May 09, 2010 at 22:18:43 from 75.169.145.251

Joe- 1.1 miles up the trail there is a switchback with a sign that points back towards the wind caves. You want to go straight past that sign- that is the route to the ridge. But it is very overgrown, rough, and steep. Very slow. Still fun, though. Yes, it hooks up with Bierdneau trail that comes from Green Canyon and follows the ridge all the way to Tony Grove. The trail into Green is still snowy.

Scott- for the record, Cody and I were never lost. We knew exactly how to get to the top- just head uphill. But it's true we didn't know where we were relative to the trail. But we successfully found it last month.

Medium Workout

Guess I just didn't have a BW in me this week.  Warmed up for 3.5 miles.  I was going to do 3x2000m at 5:30/mi., but after the first one I crashed so I cut it short after 1000m of the second one when it started off slow and got slower.  Turned the workout into a reverse pyramid, going as fast as possible on each interval.  Went much better after this.  Here are my splits:

2000m: 6:51 right on pace

1000m: 3:33 slow

800m: 2:35

600m: 1:51

400m: 1:09

Finished with a few more easy miles.  No tempo run.  Just didn't have it in me.  Decent workout though.

Not a good run today.  I took an hour long nap before my run and then set out to run the BST and TV towers.  Run did not start well, and never got better.  I felt really out of it and even nauseous at times...and this was before I even got to the mountain.  I got as far as the first shoulder of the trail to the TV towers and decided just to bag it as I was feeling dizzy and ill.  It may have been that I hadn't taken time to fully wake up before trying to run, or maybe it was because my nutrition has been terrible the last few days as I have been trying to restock my groceries on a very limited budget, or maybe a combination.  Anyway, I ran back home and fixed myself a giant plate of spaghetti and felt better afterwards.  Good news is that the climbing itself wasn't making me tired at all.  Legs felt like they had plenty of juice to go the whole way.

Just saw your last Sat run- if you want a good workout, head up Wind Caves instead of the highway past GMC.

Ever interested in running Dry Canyon with me?

From Predog on Thu, Jun 03, 2010 at 14:17:56 from 129.123.242.194

I usually do that, but I didn't really feel like pounding down that trail after an 80 mile week, so I just ran along the shoulder of the highway playing chicken with cars instead this time. And yes, I would definitely be interested in a Dry Canyon run.

Mountain Workout

Ran from my place to the TV reflectors on top of the mountain just east of town via First Dam and BST.  3000 foot climb from lowest point (First Dam) to highest point (top of the hill), but there were hills all over in between that including Old Main Hill so it was probably more like 4000+ feet of total climbing.  That was kind of the point of this workout though.  Man, that hill is steep.  Some spots I swear are a 45 degree angle.  Running was probably the wrong word for most of the main climb...more of a jog walk, but that's all I could manage.  Excellent workout.  Quads are destroyed both from the climb and the controlled slide back down.  I didn't biff it once though, so that's a good sign.  Otherwise I probably would be dead, because I think once you start rolling on that hill you won't stop 'til you hit the bottom.  Anyway, great workout.  Hopefully it will help prep me for Logan Peak.

Note to self:  Going on a long run starting at 11:00 at night is not a great idea.  I have never had this happen before, but as I was just about back home I kept getting slower and slower until I was just going at a plod and was actually getting sleepy while running...then I guess I momentarily fell asleep at the wheel because the next thing I knew I was running into a bush on the side of the road.  It was weird.  Never had any idea that was possible.  It must have only been for a moment though because I don't remember any discontinuity really, just that I was all of a sudden running into a bush.  It was a good thing I was only a block or two from home.  Interesting experience.  But I got my 70 for the week.

Gotta love it.

I once started a long run from my house up to Guinevah Malibu at 10:30 pm. I remember sitting on the toilet at Third Dam at 12:30 am wishing I had a cell phone to call for a ride, cause I was way too tired (sleepy and physically) and felt crappy. I eventually dragged my butt home around 2 am, I think. Don't think I'll ever forget that one!

Fun run today.  Did the Jardine Juniper trail with Jon and Cody.  Great trail for running.  I think it is now one of my favorites.  It was really good to run with Jon and Cody again after so long.  We took it easy on the way up and chatted about the coming Logan Peak race and other odds and ends and it was real nice to catch up on everything.  The tree itself was pretty cool...much bigger than I expected with only a little tuft of green at the top of an impossibly gnarled and twisted skeleton of a trunk.  Pretty neat sight.  The views from the trail are gorgeous as well.  I think I am going to have to actually hike it (Imagine that--hiking a trail! Who does that?) sometime very soon so that I can take it slow and enjoy the scenery some more.  Anyway, on the way back Jon told me I should take the lead and go fast and so we ended up averaging just under 6 min. miles the whole way down.  It was fun to just boom down the trail and not have to worry too much about tripping over stuff in most places.  Good run.  Good company.  Boosted my confidence on as the clock continues to wind down to LP.  I am getting really excited for this race!  Thanks for the run Jon and Cody.  Lets not let it be so long until next time.

Final long run before Logan Peak.  Felt absolutely fantastic.  Ran to Wind Caves via the River Trail (again...I need to scout more long routes) with extensions to get the miles in.  Had a bit of excitement on the way back when I came round a corner just before SHC and found myself practically nose to nose with a moose.  Ok...so maybe it wasn't quite nose to nose, but after a few minutes of staring each other down he decided I wasn't actually a threat he came CLOSER until I could have reached out and poked him in the nose if I'd have wanted to.  I had definitely NOT decided that he wasn't a threat so I did no such thing.  After a few minutes of trying to get past him without getting myself into a spot where I couldn't run away quickly he started wandering up the trail the same way I was going.  I walked behind at a respectful distance until he left the trail so I could get past.  Cool experience, but it made me a little nervous.  He was BIG even though he couldn't have been much more than a yearling.  I was nervous because the whole time I was remembering my dad telling me about him getting charged by an angry momma moose when he was a Boy Scout and I was having visions of being mashed against a tree or something.  Anyway, interesting experience.  You don't have that happen every day.

So, apparently, God didn't want me to run today.  Wish I would have known that earlier.  Was supposed to go on a long run with Jon and Cody, but I got off work late because right when I was getting ready to clock out some things came up that had to be done and I was the only one there to do them.  So I was 10 min. late getting off work and missed Jon and Cody.  Tried to catch them, following some guy's directions that they had gone onto the River Trail (don't know if that was actually the case or not) and ran my guts out trying to make time and catch them.  Eventually I gave up and turned around and went back to First Dam where my car was.  By this time I was dead from running fast with no warmup, plus the leftover fatigue from Saturday.  Almost decided to call it quits right there but thought I'd drive over to the Planet Walk and do a couple easy miles there to cool down and try to make a respectable day of it.  This went fine until I went to cross the RR tracks.  I slipped on the embankment, tripped over both rails, and ate it on the other side.  I really banged up the toes on my right foot somewhere in the process and scraped up my left hand, elbow, and leg pretty good.  I jogged/limped over across the bridge and surveyed the damage:  bloody hands, elbow and toes.  My feet are going to be the ugliest things on planet earth before too long.  At this point I was done so I soaked my legs in the river and tried to wash off some of the dust and blood.  Limp-jogged back to the car and went home to lick my wounds.  Don't worry, I'll be back at it tomorrow.

Quite the adventure! We waited till 5:20 for you, then thought you might have driven up the canyon to meet us at second or third dam. You missed a doozy of a run

Love the RR fall story- I've crossed that thing hundreds of times, but will have to treat it with more respect from now on. If you toes are ugly, then it just means you're a regular trail runner!

From Predog on Wed, Jun 16, 2010 at 02:08:46 from 24.10.140.186

Yeah, it wouldn't have happened if I wouldn't have slipped just a little on the gravel on the uphill side of the tracks. Sneaky devil. Yeah it sounded like a fun run that I missed. You were probably 3/4 of a mile ahead of me when I started if you left at 5:20, depending on how fast you were going. I wasn't going to catch you anytime soon on my legs the way they felt today.

Oh hey, and I meant to ask you and Jon (and anyone else who has input) what you are doing as far as fueling...do you just do the aid station stuff, or do you recommend other provisions? I've never done a race like this so I was just curious what y'all do.

From Cody on Sun, Jun 20, 2010 at 17:56:18 from 174.52.244.185

I am a recent fan of Shot blocks. I will have 2 of those with me and rely on the aid stations to fill the gaps. They do a great job at Logan Peak and the placement of the aid stations are perfect. Bring a handheld bottle or some kind of hydration pack for sure. I can loan you one if you need it.

From Cody on Sun, Jun 20, 2010 at 17:57:26 from 174.52.244.185

Jon's a fan of gels and carries a flask for longer races. He will probably rely on those exclusively.

From Jon on Sun, Jun 20, 2010 at 18:03:07 from 75.169.149.16

This race is short enough that I won't carry a whole flask. Doesn't fit in the green shorts, after all. :)

The aid stations are about an hour apart at our pace (assuming minimal snow slowdown- which might play a factor this year). So 1 handheld is perfect, like Cody said. I'll start with 2 gu's, and take 1 or 2 gu/shot blocks from each aid station. I try to do a gu every 30 min or so. They also have lots of solid food- I suggest carrying a small ziplock to eat food on the go, if you do that.

From Predog on Sun, Jun 20, 2010 at 18:08:07 from 24.10.140.186

Ok. I've never tried the gels or anything like that, but there's a first time for everything. I have one water bottle, but no nifty carrying devices or anything so if you are willing to loan me something for the race I would be very grateful. I've been doing all of my training with nothing except one bottle on my long runs, so I'm hoping that helps too.

From Predog on Sun, Jun 20, 2010 at 18:12:20 from 24.10.140.186

Logan Park at about 5, picked up my packet and waited around with my parents (they came all the way from Hurricane to watch me--they're great) until Jon and Cody showed up.  Cody graciously let me borrow his bottle with the cool little hand loop.  Jogged around and warmed up with them for a bit, and earned my second star for the race (the first star was at home).  Soon they had us on the line starting and Cody, Jon, and I were quickly in the lead pack with a couple of other guys (one was named Scott I believe, and the other name I forget).  Dry Canyon was a relaxed but still very tough climb to the first aid station, during which one of our pack dropped off and another guy named Chris joined us.  We then crossed a bit of snow, and a few downed trees and began the South Syncline loop.  Soon the trail became very downhill and we started cruising pretty fast.  Scott started to pull ahead and Cody and I were flying along trying to keep contact, with Jon and Chris not far behind when Cody took a bad spill in front of me.  I was a little worried as he looked a little rattled and didn't seem to take well to jumping up and running again.  He made it though.  After that things settled down a bit until we got to the second aid station.  At this point I was starting to feel a little fatigue in the legs, but not too bad.  Chris then began pushing the pace to the top, although Jon, Cody, Scott and I hung back.  Instinctively I wanted to chase him to maintain position, but I followed Jon and Cody's example and held off, and I was grateful I did.  I am definitely not used to the strategic approach used in a race like this, so I pretty much followed Jon's and Cody's every move for basically the whole race (thanks, guys).   Anyway, back to the narrative.  We reached the top (Scott dropped off somewhere in the ascent) and unfortunately had no time to admire the fantastic views, as we needed to chase down Chris.  I will have to get up there again sometime to fully appreciate it.  We caught Chris coming down to the aid station again, and he dropped off quickly.  After a quick stop grabbing some Gu and electrolyte caplets I took off and soon was able to catch up to Cody.  Jon was a few meters ahead but we maintained contact and caught up on the single track.  The climb up North Syncline was absolutely brutal, but I made it fine with energy at the top to cruise down to the final aid station.  Here Cody just blew through, and I made the momentary decision that anything I would get there would not have time to help me before the race was over, so I followed and this seemed to be where the race really began to heat up.  Jon fell off, although I didn't know it at this point.  I was focused on keeping close contact with Cody, as he had really turned on the afterburners.  Made it through the switchbacks with no mishap, but coming into the shady section I began to have a hard time breathing and felt as if I could not open my lungs to get air in.  Really weird feeling.  I attribute it to the quick descent.  Anyway, this caused me to lose contact with Cody while trying to resolve the issue, all the while expecting to hear Jon come pounding down behind me.  All of this not paying attention soon resulted in me taking a nose dive and sliding down the trail.  Oh did it hurt!  I banged up my knees and shoulder, and I even have somewhat of a shiner on my cheekbone.  But I believe that this turned out to be a good thing, as it completely relaxed me and I had no more breathing problems after this point.  My goal now was just to make it down the canyon with an untied shoe without tripping and to get this thing over with.  Back on the Deer Fence section I was surprised with my ability to deal with the rolling hills even though my legs were gone.  I think I was just so used to them being dead tired that it didn't matter anymore.  Finally made it to the road and back to the park.  Finished with a little slow sprint for show and came in a little under a minute behind Cody.  I was so surprised that I finished second.  I did not expect to do anywhere near this well or to even come close to touching the CR.  It was great though!  I feel wonderful about this race, and I am definitely putting it on the calendar for next year.  Many thanks to Cody and Jon for letting me stick right with them and helping me along.  Thanks also to my Mom and Dad and my friends who showed up to support me.  Congratulations to both Jon and Cody on some great races.  Cody was an animal and Jon is just a beast for running the kind of mileage he has been and only taking a little taper and still having a great race.  FRB with a clean sweep as well, so that's fun.  Great race, great company, and just a great time overall!

That was an awesome race you ran. There are definitely some tactics to hilly ultras like this, as you learned. Maybe we should have sent you after Chris on the uphill, so I could have later passed you and finished 2nd! Just kidding. You ran great for your first ultra/trail race, and it's scary how much more potential you have. Go crush your marathon PR, then spank Cody at Logan Peak next year!

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the support.

Scott, I really think you would have a blast with this race. It's definitely tough, but I think you could do it if you can do a marathon, with a little extra mountain training.

Jon, thanks. Coming from you that's a great compliment. I really do appreciate y'all giving me pointers and stuff. I was unsure of how it would go but it was great to run with you guys with all your experience.

Paul, yeah I thought that was kinda odd too, but the battle scars are cool to brag about. hahaha

Work for it? I was running scared out of my mind down Dry Canyon. I knew Joe would catch me at any point and then it would be Game Over. Joe is a force to be reckoned with. Next year he will destroy us!

Well done Joe and you are in for a great summer of PR's!

Spur of the moment 5k.  My friends who I am helping get ready for the TOU half wanted to run it, and said I should come too, so I thought "what the heck."  Rode with my friends and one of their roomies who drove us there.  We were already running a hair behind when I would have left, but I figured it would be ok because this seemed like a really low key race.  Anyway, to make matters worse we got pulled over on the way, and made it to the starting line with about 5 minutes before the race started.  I hurried and registered and threw on my flats and got to the line with about 30 seconds to spare.  Race was uneventful.  Dropped everyone after about 200 meters.  I am kind of disgusted with my lack of drive to really push myself when running alone in this race.  I knew I had it in the bag and I just kind of coasted.  I will have to work on that, and find some other drive besides winning when I know that I'm going to win.  I'm kicking myself for not running the 10k instead, since I found out after the race that Walter Brown of the blog ran the 10k and would have given me someone to try and stick with.  Good news is, I felt like I could have easily maintained that pace for 10 or 15k without too much trouble.  Legs were not even tired afterwards.  Lungs were a little burned, but that's it.  After I finished I ran back about a half mile and helped my friends run in.  I also saw my old XC coach who is now living in Smithfield (he took 3rd in the 10k and his wife and little daughter ran the mile) and a kid I know from home who is apparently also going to school up here.  As I said before I met Walter, which was nice.  I've decided that if you can't get away from the FRB mafia in Lewiston, UT, you won't get away from it anywhere.  Soon we will assimilate all of humanity into the borg.  (ok, a little too much Star Trek...)  :)

Went to Bear Lake today with the family, rode jet skis, played on the beach, swam, got totally fried, blistered my feet on the burning hot sand between the bathrooms and the beach, then came home and ran.  Despite the blisters and massive sunburnage, I felt absolutely fantastic.  Turned it into a tempo run and then felt so good I decided to try and hit my goal TOU pace (6:00/mi.) or better for the run, which I managed to do nicely.  My route was similar to, and included some parts of, the last few miles of TOU with some rolling hills and such.  Just a great run today.

Ricks Canyon-Steel Hollow loop with Jon and Cody.  Well, mostly with Cody.  Jon wanted to go set a course record so we let him go on ahead after a few minutes, or so we thought.  Turns out we unknowingly passed him earning a star, so he was behind us trying to catch us most of the way, but every time he got close he would have to stop again.  He must have had a regular constellation going on by the time we got done.  At one point he was 10 seconds behind us and we were totally oblivious.  Anyway, the run was enjoyable.  Shady for the most part and the running felt relaxed, after a few minutes of feeling stiff at the beginning.  Beautiful scenery.

Epic trail run with Jon and Cody.  Ran from Tony Grove to Franklin Basin/Logan River via White Pine Lake, Bunchgrass, Steam Mill Hollow, an out and back to Steam Mill Lake, Steep Hollow, and then finally down the Franklin Basin Road to where Jon's car was cached.  Did I get all of it?  Yeah, something like that.  Anyway, I was tired most of the run.  I think all of us were.  We finished with a couple of fast miles, not because we necessarily had the energy, but because I think we just wanted to be done after 4 hours of running.  It was great though.  Spectacular scenery that most people will never get the chance to see.  There were times that we were running that it was almost perfectly silent.  Great run.  Good company.  Very enjoyable.  But I am very tired.

Big Workout #2

1.5 slow warm up, then 10 miles at a very fast tempo pace, followed by 2.5 cool down.  I was apprehensive about today's workout, and almost cut it short before I even got started, but I got out there anyway after work and after warming up all of a sudden everything just clicked and I was able to really get in a quality workout.  I don't know what it is about running at night for me, but I always feel great, and tonight was no exception.  I was definitely firing on all cylinders.  Tempo was comfortably under 6:00/mi. pace, and while it was certainly a tough workout, it felt like with more work and a good taper I could maintain close to that pace for a marathon.  Much less forced than Thursday's BW.  Today's course was a little more flat than Thursday, but it still included some long, gradual grades mixed with a few shorter hills, somewhat like what I'll be dealing with the last few miles of TOU.  With a mile to go in the tempo portion I was definitely feeling the workout, but I felt like I still had more energy to give so I hit the turbos and flew the rest of the way.  Cool down was relaxed and easy. Only complaint is my shoulders were a little tight and my left knee was feeling a little sore.  Probably time to invest in some new shoes very soon.

Long fairly easy run.  Felt surprisingly rested and ready to go.  Green Canyon.  Hadn't done that trail in awhile.  Got some good paces going on after the turnaround, and felt generally pretty good the whole time around.  Jon's water bottle gift proved to be a great addition to my run as well.  It was nice not to have to guzzle water at every drinking fountain and still be dehydrated.

Yes very much so. Hey are you still thinking you want to do the Wellsvilles on Wednesday the 18th? I'm still in if you are and my car is available too. I haven't had internet for a few days so I have been pretty sporadic.. I'm off Wednesday and Friday this week.

Yes, I would be free both all of wednesday and thursday AM. Wellsvilles on Thursday might actually fit better with my running schedule anyway, but whatever you wanna do will work.

Long run.  Ran a new route today including the infamous Landfill Loop with an out and back almost to Mendon.  Long flat run--perfect for a BW, but the legs were just dead for some reason.  I ran into Cody and it ended up being good because I'm going to be running a gnarly mountain run on Saturday and need to have legs.  Plus (I'm actually writing this in retrospect on Wednesday afternoon), Jon and I are going to assault Ben Lomond Peak tomorrow.

Another 16 mile run.  Jon and I drove down to North Ogden and conquered Ben Lomond Peak.  3700 feet climbing.  Views at the top were amazing.  The trail was also surprisingly runnable, although rocky in places.  Even the steep 1000 foot final ascent to the peak in 1.5 miles wasn't too bad.  This was a really great trail and if it wasn't so far to get there I would do it often.  As it is I will probably do it again sometime.  Totally worth an hour drive on occasion.  It would be fantastic in the fall.  Stopped at Sonic in Brigham afterwards for a well earned greasy cheeseburger, and discussed the health benefits of cheeseburgers for runners.  This is one of the last runs I'll do with Jon, and that's unfortunate, but it was a good one!

Was going to run Stump Hollow with Jon this morning, but we got there and it was storming with lightning and lots of rain.  Neither of us was much relishing the idea of 10 miles in mud, rain, cold, and potentially getting fried by lightning.   We drove back hoping that Jardine Juniper or even the River Trail would be less stormy but with no luck.  Nice early morning drive up the canyon I guess, though.  Went home and went back to bed for four more hours of glorious sleep.  Haven't been getting a lot of that lately, but maybe that's a good thing to get ready for school.  haha.  Went running about noon and was only going to go 10 miles really easy, but my legs really felt surprisingly good today considering the high mileage so I went 10 at a moderate effort and then threw on a couple more at the end because I felt like it.  Still felt like a rest, but I will take it more easy tomorrow.

This was a doozie.  Got up at 4:30 AM, got ready and headed off to meet Jon and Cody at the start of the Green Canyon singletrack.  About halfway there I got a call from Jon about how Cody had slept in so I waited in the parking lot for them until they showed up about 5:25.  I get the on-time award for today, for once.  Drove up in Cody's Cherokee to the start of the Bierdneau trail and turned on our headlamps (thanks Jon, for letting me borrow yours and almost not return it) and started our trek.  The first section was nice.  Trail was steep, but runnable.  Once we ridgelined, the trail wasn't as good, but it was still runnable and we seemed to be making progress.  The views of the sunrise over Logan Canyon and of Green Canyon were spectacular, with the lights of Logan twinkling in the distance.  Rounding Beirdneau, the trail steadily deteriorated, becoming pretty rough and at times quite faint.  We continued northward along the top of the ridge headed for Mount Elmer.  Somewhere along this portion I started getting pretty tired, and by the time we could see Elmer I was starting to feel pretty worn out.  My lack of eating yesterday, the elevation, and the early morning were beginning to take their toll on me.  The final ascent to the peak was brutal on me, but the promise of the spectacular views and my pride kept me going.  At the top we took a much needed (at least for me) breather and took some great photos.  I ate my two granola bars as well, hoping to ward off the bonk.  Coming down the scree slopes and the very steep, rough trail proved to be more of a chore for me than coming up.  My knees, hips, and feet were aching and I had little energy or drive.  Returning to the ridge, we turned off trail to try to find and summit Mt. Jardine.  I kept up with Jon and Cody for the ascent, but coming down I was reduced to a plod, picking my way down the super steep weed-slope we chose for our exit to Green Canyon.  At this point I was pretty much miserable, and fell behind although I did manage to keep Jon and Cody in sight.  Finally, we hit the GC trail and the going was much easier, although it was rocky and still slower and more painful than I would have liked for it to have been at that point.  But it was a genuine trail, so I wasn't complaining too much.  Finally got down to the smoother section I had run before and began to open up the pace a little bit and started having fun again.  Jon and Cody were out of sight by now, but I knew the way.  They waited for me at the Yurt, and after that I guess the granola bars had finally kicked in and I was able to feel more fresh and keep up.  Trail was busy with bikers, but we finally made it to the car and I was never happier to see it.  What an epic run.  I haven't decided if I like the route or not (I'll withhold judgment until I feel better), but there is no doubting that the views were incredible and that it was a great adventure.  I think it was worth it.  It was also my last run with Jon until I pace him in the Bear 100 next month.  He's been a great training partner in dragging me out and showing me all the amazing trails and things there are to see around Cache Valley.  A great motivator and role model--everything a training partner should be.  I wish him the best of luck and happy trail running in South Carolina.  In his honor, I hereby dub this run the Jon Allen Memorial Trail Run.  It just might be epic, crazy, and tough enough to bear that title.

Scoped out the TOU course today.  Had my cousin shuttle me up Blacksmith Fork and I just ran the whole way back.  Tried out this new drink mix stuff that my dad's cousin (or aunt?) sent me to try.  Seemed to do a good job.  It's called Solistic Revive or something...basically just a bunch of electrolytes (Ca, Mg, K, Na, etc, with some fructose and glucosamine and stuff).  She wanted me to test it out for her.  Anyway.  Pace was fast for a training run of this distance.  I hope I didn't push too hard.  I have two weeks to recover though so as long as I remain injury free I think I'll be fine.  I wanted to simulate the feel of how it's going to be so I wanted to push fairly hard.  Learned some things about the course.  I am so ready for this!  Can't wait.

Say, do you need a TOU pace predictor worksheet? It tells you how fast you should go (even effort) in each mile for a certain goal. Very useful to me last year- I printed off 5 mile splits for 2:32, 2:35, and 2:40, and laminated with clear packing tape. I have the xls, if you want me to email it to you.

From Predog on Fri, Sep 17, 2010 at 01:34:40 from 24.10.140.186

Is that the one Paul put together? I did find a copy of it and I've done exactly that (minus laminating it and stuff yet). I don't want to remember 26 miles of splits so I broke it up into 5 mile intervals plus splits for half, 20 miles, and the final 10k.

Ok, here's the big report:

Got up at 4:30, ate a small breakfast and headed out.  Me and my friend Jamie, who was running her first marathon (she would go on to take 9th in her division in 4:04:30--pretty good for the first time) drove together to Merlin Olsen Park and waited in line for the buses .  We got underway at about 5:50 and got to Hardware Ranch and the starting line at about 6:30.  Lines at the portajons were super long and slow.  But I got my stars earned for the race just in time to run down to the starting line and shuck my extra clothes and get ready to go.  Temps were chilly at about freezing, but I didn't notice it.  Focused on the race.  Start was uneventful.  I was somewhat worried about starting off at a pace as fast as I needed to, worrying that the shock would be too much, but it wasn't bad at all.  First mile was right on target at 5:44 and felt like a breeze.  After that I knew that I could do it and didn't worry about the pace being too much anymore.

5 miles:  First five miles were uneventful.  The Kenyans and Sasha (who I met for the first time in person) took off after about 2 miles.  I settled in the loosely formed chase pack of about 6 or 7 guys.  We spread out a little bit, but everyone was mostly in sight for most of this portion. Came across 5 miles about 30 seconds slow, but I didn't worry about it.

10 miles:  Our pack kinda split up, with three guys going ahead quite a bit, one Master between, and me and an 18 year old local boy bringing up the rear.  Can't remember my 10K split, and the results are messed up so I can't tell, but I think it was 35:something or 36 minutes.  10 mile split was 59:20ish.

15 miles:  Dropped the 18 year old like a rock, and pulled in the Master and one other guy that had gone with the first part of our now defunct chase pack, but now he looked like he was hurting.  Hit the half in ~1:17:10.  15 mile split was 1:27:--, so back on pace.

20 miles:  Cody hooked up with me right at the 15 mile aid and gave some much needed company and support for a couple of miles, which I much appreciated, as I was starting to become quite conscious of the pace.  I had also become aware of a slight twinge in my right hamstring, but more on that later.  Pace was still fast, hitting 5:45s or so pretty consistently.  After Cody pulled off, things got rough in a hurry.  I could see Sasha ahead of me, and I was closing pretty quickly, but I was also really starting to feel fatigue.  The spectators, including my crazy roommates helped motivate me though.  Some jerk was also burning very smoky weeds right after mile 18--as I was climbing Millville Hill--making breathing difficult.  But I got through the hill and apparently had made up a lot of time as my 20 mile split was fast by nearly a minute at 1:56:-- (good for 2:34 if I could hold it).

Final 10K:  (aka, the Death March)  Made it through mile 21 or so in good shape, but was really feeling the fatigue.  Legs were gone and I still had one big rise to conquer.  Pace was still decent though.  Just trying to last through it and reel in Sasha.  Unfortunately, that was not to be.  That twinge in the hamstring became a major problem somewhere between mile 22 and 23.  Each stride felt like my hamstring was going to tear in half.  I was even tempted to walk, but my pride and the knowledge that it wouldn't do me any good kept me going.  Pace became rather horrible at this point, but I had to keep going.  Sasha was long gone by mile 25, and I almost got run over by some dingleberry who apparently didn't realize that there was a marathon going on and decided to gun it through the course right in front of me.  I was pretty cranky at this point, but I managed to keep my reaction PG-rated.  Got through the last mile and finished in 2:38:15.

Overall I am very happy with this race.  I feel like I ran a smart race, and gave it everything I had.  PR by over 15 minutes, although it has been 2 years since my last road marathon.  I feel great about my performance, but I know I can run faster without a badly tweaked hamstring, so my next goal is sub-2:35.  I haven't decided yet what my next race will be, but Ogden is looking like a good candidate.  Anyway, great day, great race!  Looking forward to the next one.

This was all I could muster today.  Still quite sore, although yesterday was absolutely miserable and today probably is out of the miserable range and more in the fairly sore range.  Right hamstring is pretty painful though still.  I was able to run, but had to favor it heavily.  Legs have nothing, but my right leg feels decent, as I'm sure the rest of my left leg does besides the hammie.  Still no juice whatsoever.  But that's to be expected.  I just hope I can recover in time to not have Jon drop me like a rock on Friday even though he will be running 100 miles to my 15.

Jon's Bear 100 Crewing Report Version 2.0

It was fun pacing Jon for 15 miles.

Ok, ok, Cody, if you insist I'll write more.   I got up at the lovely hour of 7 AM and threw all my stuff together to get ready for my pacing and crewing duties today.  I was pretty excited to see what this 100 miler thing was all about and excited to see Jon finally do this.  Drove to Leetham Hollow and there met Cody, Paul, and Dave and got instructions (or at least a review of the 45 pages of printed material sent to me at sundry times by Jon) on what I was supposed to do.  I was a little nervous at first hoping I would do everything right so that Jon wouldn't have to worry about anything, but my duties proved fairly easy to handle.  Got Jon thru the aid station in the lead pack and looking like he wasn't a bit tired.  Good sign so far.  Hung around for a few more minutes trying to help out as best I could, and then left to take care of my crewing duties at Cowley Canyon.  Stopped at Quizno's in Logan on the way to grab a sandwich for lunch.  Got to the Cowley aid about 20 minutes ahead of Jon and chatted with some of the other crews there and made acquaintances with some.  We would be seeing a lot of each other for the next 12-15 hours or so.  Jon came through still looking very strong.  He was chatting with some of the other runners and seemed to be in high spirits. On pace for his "fast" goal of 20 hours. So far so good.  Got him in and out in probably 1-2 minutes, as this was a pretty easy aid.  Packed up and drove down the canyon to Right Hand Fork and prepped everything.  Cody and Marci showed up and helped me finish while I did my own preparation for my pacing duties.  Jon came in still looking pretty strong.  Definitely tired after 35 plus miles, but looking very spry and chipper for having run that far.  After a quick shoe change we took off.  We immediately realized that we had forgotten sunscreen so I ran back and grabbed it.  Took me a good 5 minutes to catch Jon, as he was still maintaining a very good pace.  Going up Willow was pretty easy and we maintained a steady pace all the way through to Mud Flats.  Jon was chatty and seemed to be in good spirits.  We talked about how he wasn't going to do like the other guys and go out crazy fast.  His strategy proved to be sound later in the race.  We caught one of the RDs (I think) just before Temple Fork and then I ran ahead to fill the Cody and Dave in on Jon's needs.  After a brief pit stop we hightailed it out of Temple Fork and started the long climb up Blind Hollow.  This section proved difficult for Jon and we slowed to a hike for most of this section.  I could tell that the fatigue was setting in, especially when he had me pull out the elevation chart and add up all of the climbing for sanity's sake.  If I'd have known we were going to be doing math I would have brought some of my Calculus II homework for us to work on.  Live and learn.  We did figure out that at the top of Blind we would have done over 2/3 of the total climbing for the course, which I think Jon found to be heartening news.  We finally summited and Jon started to pick up the pace descending into Tony Grove.  I struggled again to build a gap enough to give some warning to the crew because Jon was going so fast.  Got to the aid and got Jon and Cody on their way.  My pacing duties were over and I was famished so I downed my entire sandwich and a couple of granola bars.  The rest of the day/night were spent going from aid to aid and making sure Jon and Cody's (and later Dave's) needs were met.  I think we did a pretty good job...I hope I did anyway, seeing as how this was my first time doing anything like that.  It was really an eye opening experience to watch Jon at the different stages of the race.  I can't say enough about how much I look up to him in accomplishing something of that magnitude.  I think it taught me a lot about life as well, but I'll spare you my pontifications on the subject, as this report is becoming lengthy.  It was great to finally see him run across the finish line at 3 AM and I am very grateful that I was able to contribute in some small way to his success.  Great job Jon!

Final note with regards to my hamstring injury:  it was sore, but I think that it is improving every day.  I am no longer worried about it.

 Over and out.

This was really my first run back from TOU where I actually felt like myself again.  Not that I felt like breaking any land speed records today, but I actually felt good and motivated for the first time since the race.  Hamstring is still a mite tender, but I wouldn't say it hurts anymore.  I'm going to shoot for 50 easy miles this week and see how that feels.  Also, I'm going to register for the Provo Halloween Half-Marathon (Oct. 30) once payday rolls around.  I think it will be a good way to keep motivated for the next few weeks.  I've noticed that the month or so after a marathon-distance race tends to be extremely difficult for me mentally and motivation-wise, so this should help by giving me something to look forward to.  At the same time it is pretty low key as far as how serious I'm going to take it, so it won't be a temptation to overdo things while I'm recovering.  It will be my first half as well.  Anyway, that's the plan for the next little bit.  Recover, while still maintaining a good level of fitness so that I can have a productive winter in preparation for a likely spring/early summer marathon. Ogden? Boston? (if I'm feeling rich--not likely), something else?

Yeah it's gone well. It's taken a couple of weeks, and I think it's been the most prolonged recovery I've ever had, as far as how long I've been feeling the effects of it, but then again it was the most intense race I've ever done as well.

Rainy run with Cody today.  But it was a really great one.  This is by far the best I've felt at least since TOU and probably before.  Runs like today are a big part of why I run at all.  Jardine got rained out, so we decided to do Green Canyon, but that got rained out too, so we started off on the BST out and back.  That went ok, but I guess my long nap today had done something weird to me and I felt really lethargic and almost sleepy.  But by the time we got back to the mouth of Green Canyon we were seeing blue skies and we were soaked anyway, so we went up the single track.  It was beautiful.  Between the clouds, colors, wet, and sunset it was one of the most scenic runs I've been on.  Who knew that a trail you've run umpteen times can always still surprise you when the weather or season changes?  I started feeling good and Cody apparently did too (minus one potty break) because we pushed the pace pretty hard, especially coming back.  I felt fantastic.  No hurt at all in the legs and I felt like I could go as fast as I wanted.  I was so motivated by this that I did another three once I got home, just for kicks.

Another great run today on the River Trail.  I think I set a course PR...I will have to dig up the archives and check, but I know it was very fast and I don't remember doing it faster.  It felt effortless though.  I've been very pleasantly surprised with how well this week has gone and that for all intents and purposes I seem to be pretty well recovered from TOU much sooner than expected.  Hopefully it's the beginning of a good winter.

Small Workout

Ran to Logan High to warm up (2.5 mi. in 18:45) then did 4x800 (GP 5:30/mi.) with 400 recovery between intervals.  Followed with 2x200 all out.

Here are my splits:

4X800m

2:22 (4:44/mi.) Got a little excited to start with...

2:40 (5:20/mi.) Still fast, but at least in the ball park.

2:41 (5:22/mi.) Feeling good.

2:45 (5:30/mi.) Right on target...for the last one.  :P  But better fast than slow.

2X200m

00:29 This is as fast as I can go...Sheesh I've gotten slow in my old age!  :)

00:30 Done.

Ran another 5 miles in 34:53.  Pretty dead, but it felt nice to get a speedy workout in.  It's been awhile.

Joe, I have started track work again on tuesdays and thursdays if you are in the mood and have time. Like mile repeats on Tuesdays, then shorter (400s) on thursdays. I am pretty flexible when I go, but like to wait for it to warm up a bit (10AM-noon).

From Predog on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 02:26:52 from 24.10.136.228

I'd definitely be down for that. Thursdays I usually work in the morning/early afternoon, but I seem to get Tuesdays at that time off on a fairly regular basis...at least historically. This week is no good for me, as I have a half marathon this weekend and I'm taking it easy but I'll let you know what my sched is like next week.

This was my debut half marathon, which, as Paul pointed out on my facebook page is kind of strange, considering I've run two marathons and a trail ultra already.  But I had never actually done a half before today so this was new to me.  Here's the somewhat belated report:

Woke up at 6 AM, and drove with my friend Jamie to the bus pickup.  I thought that this race seemed to be more about dressing up than racing, and this was confirmed when we got to the pickup area and there were 2000 people in line and about 5 buses.  More buses came, but it took a long time compared to other similar events.  It was ok though, because I kind of expected it to be that way just from the tone of the event website and things so I wasn't too stressed about it.  After all, this is just a race to keep me motivated through my post-marathon doldrums.  Finally got on a bus at about 7:30 or so and did most of my race prep on the bus and talked with Jamie on the way up.  My "costume" was just my full body black winter spandex stuff with black gloves and a black "ninja" mask which I use in very cold weather.  Didn't look much like a ninja with a white SGRC singlet on (totally stealthy huh?), but oh well.  Maybe I should have bought some plastic katanas (sp?) to go with it.  Anyway, we had about an hour before the start once we got up to the staging area so I earned another star (** for the race) and went inside the big and very warm tent for awhile.  Temps outside were chilly, but not as bad as I expected.  Probably actually warmer than the TOU start.  Warmed up for about ten minutes and made my way to the starting line where I saw Walter and Steve (?) who was also wearing a blog singlet.  There were also a couple of fast looking guys wearing Utah Elite singlets (they would go on to take the top 2 spots).  I was happy to see that it would be at least somewhat competitive even with the party vibe.  Anyway, enough prelim.  We started about 12 minutes late, but apparently that wasn't too bad compared to the previous year.  There was a bus blocking the way about 100 yards out, and I would have paid 10 bucks to see the bus driver's face to see us all come around the bend full tilt while he was still crosswise in the road.  I was too busy trying to figure out how to get around to look though.  We settled into a very fast pace down the side canyon.  Mile 1 was a 5:18, mile 2 was a blistering 4:53, but I felt good and didn't really want to let that lead pack go, so I just tried to relax and hang in there.  3 miles was 15:30 according to somebody, but I must have accidentally pushed something on my watch because it had stopped.  So now I was running blind.  But I wasn't worried.  This was just for fun and to see what I could do.  Near the bottom of the first canyon I could start to feel some fatigue in my quads from the hard downhill, but thankfully we soon turned onto the highway with more reasonable grades and I quickly felt better.  I picked off a couple of guys over the next couple of miles and settled into 5th place with Walter nipping at my heels and some really really tall guy with a 10 foot stride dressed as a devil a little bit in front.  The two UE guys were in front followed by Steve in 3rd.  Some other guy was with Walter.  Anyway, we turned onto the River Trail and soon after I started getting some very severe cramps.  it got so bad that I actually had to stop and double over twice to relax it away.  The first time was right next to some old people roller blading and I think they thought I was dying or something.  I also had problems getting enough air, oddly.  Same scenario as coming down Dry Canyon at Logan Peak.  I fought through it though and slowly gained ground on the devil guy and somehow managed to stay ahead of Walter.  I kept feeling like I was starting to lose it, but I was somehow able to mentally tough it out through these miles and maintain a respectable pace.  Somewhere around mile 9 (the marker was WAY off, so I don't really know) Jamie's mom and siblings were there cheering and so that was nice to have someone there to motivate me through a tough section.  Somewhere in here I also got passed by another guy, who looked like he was doing really well, but he didn't end up finishing that far ahead.  With 5k to go, my right calf started cramping pretty hard, but with that short of a distance left I ignored it and turned my focus to beating the devil guy, who had done an admirable job thus far of staying just out of contact, even while carrying a wicked looking trident.  I was somewhat nervous as to what would happen should I try to pass him.  But I slowly reeled him in and FINALLY passed him just after the 12 mile mark.  He was actually very gracious and not devilish at all and we exchanged congratulations between breathing.  At this point I was dead, but I willed myself to push hard the last mile and was very pleased that I actually had a decent kick.  Finished in 1:10:38 which was much much better than what I had been shooting for and very unexpected, as I had been running without time for 10 miles.  I thought I had faded a lot more, but it turns out I wasn't going all that slow after all.  Overall I was very pleased with this race.  It was a fun time.  I don't know if I'll count it as any kind of PR, since it was such a crazy downhill affair but it was fun and a good first time half.  And I beat the devil.  :)

Hey Joe, that tall guy you beat is BJ Christiansen. He just so happened to be the fastest marathon runner on the run portion in the Lake Placid Ironman from a few years ago. No easy feat there! Im glad he had a cape and a trident to slow him down enough to almost beat him myself! I went through so many emotions im not used to in that race! I was going to stop and wait for friends to run with but after being at a pr speed I had to push it for all I had. Everytime I got within striking distance to you you blasted ahead! I was only 2 seconds behind you around mile 10. You finished a minute ahead of me. So you had 3 really good miles. When most people fade. Keep up the great work.

First run in 9 days.  Legs felt much better.  I don't feel like I lost too much in the way of fitness.  After the race last Saturday, my calves were completely destroyed.  I took Monday and Tuesday off planning to run again Wednesday.  However, Tuesday night sometime I had the worst charlie horse I can remember in my right calf.  The next morning it hurt to even walk so I took Wednesday off too.  Pain was right where the muscle transitions into the Achilles tendon and it felt weak and very sore.  Thursday came with no improvement, so I basically bagged the rest of the week, figuring the rest wouldn't hurt anyway.  Today I experienced no problems until the last half mile or so of my run when the pain returned with a vengeance.  I stopped and walked the last 100 yards or so.  This is not good.  I'm hoping that it's nothing, but we'll see how it feels tomorrow.

Injury Update:

Yes, I'm upgrading this stupid calf thing from the "minor, running-related aches and pains" category to "full blown injury" status.  It's weird because I feel nothing when walking, even up stairs, and even for a couple of minutes of running, but then all of a sudden it just feels as if something is ripping in my calf/Achilles and I have to stop.  I made it one mile today (not counting a slow warmup), so there is zero improvement over Monday, if it's not actually worse.  Will keep y'all posted.  I'm going to take one more week completely off and then evaluate it again.  On the bright side, for the few minutes I was able to run today I felt fantastic in every other respect.  Hopefully this thing heals quickly so that I don't start to lose significant fitness.

It was a half marathon a few weeks ago and it was pretty chilly at the start...it was on halloween and you were kinda supposed to dress up if you wanted so I tried to go for the ninja look (minus the not-very-stealthy singlet). Unfortunately, once you got down into the canyon it was warm and so my ninja mask had to come off. And hey, it might clash, but at least I don't look like christmas...hehehe ;)

One of my favorite winter runs was in Idaho Falls on Christmas night. I ran though about 12+ inches of new fallen snow- very soft, no one around, peaceful. It's when it turns icy that the fun ends...

"Long" run tonight.  At least long by the past month's standards.  It felt really good though.  I was only planning on 5 miles, but I just "felt it" once I got out running.  It was really quite a nice run.  It was very quiet and not as cold, and the fog and snow made for a very picturesque night.  I didn't feel like I was working at all, which has not been the rule for the past few runs.

Got my new shoes from SGRC today.  Brooks Cascadia 5.  I got them on Cody's suggestion and the need for something that will have some traction in this land of the eternal ice and snow (otherwise known as Logan).  Took them out on a trial trail (pun intended) run on the BST and surrounding environs.  Trail was about an even mix of ice, snow, and mud.  Shoes performed fantastically.  I think if I'm not careful I might make these my favorite shoes ever.  The ride is very smooth even on the road and as one who's never had a pair of real trail shoes before these were great to have on the trail.  My foot would actually stay where I put it!  Imagine that...  The run felt good.  I took it easy for the most part and just enjoyed being up out of the inversion for a little while.  Pace was still decent though.  I have noticed that my stride is becoming more and more efficient.  Maybe 80-90 mpw during the summer had something to do with that.  Weather was gray and chilly, but what's new?

First pair of trail shoes- awesome. Don't wear them out before the summer when you can use them on real dirt, though! But they definitely are great for traction in snow and mud. I did lots of winter runs on BST, up Green (on the road), and Logan Canyon trail.

From Predog on Thu, Dec 09, 2010 at 02:31:04 from 24.10.160.80

I'm kinda interested to see how they hold up. If they're anything as good as my Adrenalines there will be no danger of wearing them out before summer. I put over 1000 miles on my last pair of Adrenalines.

Long run in the wet and snow and cold.  It was surprisingly enjoyable though.  I didn't mind too much except my feet and hands got pretty cold again.  Especially my feet.  It's hard to run on ice blocks for feet.  I've heard that by wrapping your feet in a plastic bag of some sort it keeps them warm.  I am going to experiment with that next time there's a cold, wet run to be run.  Anyone else have any experience with that?

interesting. i may have to try that as well -- my feet always seem to go numb the first few miles in the cold weather. as you know, it's really uncomfortable to run like that. i have tried everything -- two pairs of socks (makes it worse), no socks (makes it worse), special "storm" socks (does nothing). plastic bags might be the answer.

i actually think rossy did this on thanksgiving when it was super cold. you may want to ask him about it.

From Predog on Mon, Dec 20, 2010 at 00:17:52 from 24.10.160.80

Yeah I was thinking just putting one of those clear gallon sized bags in my shoe before I put my foot in it. I don't have a problem unless my feet get wet and I think that would help.

Easy run to start the week.  Also, today was trial number one of the plastic bag shoe liner idea.  Worked beautifully, except that I punched a hole in them running downhill on the way home.  I will experiment with putting extra bag inside the shoe next time.  I got my shoes soaking wet in the canal on purpose and it was definitely cold initially, but my feet warmed right back up after a minute or so.  I ran through every snowy field and puddle I could find but I just couldn't keep my feet cold.  I was actually pretty surprised.  It was no sauna in there, but it wasn't uncomfortable by any means.

From Predog on Wed, Dec 22, 2010 at 02:24:17 from 24.10.160.80

Not usually, but saturday I was pretty much running through slush and water for 12 miles straight and my feet got really cold and hard to run on as a result so I decided to experiment around for the next time it's wet and snowy out at the same time. If it's dry my feet don't get cold at all, even in sub-zero weather.
