Alright.  I am back.

Well, I don't really know what has been going on with me the last month or so.  Ever since finals week my motivation has been nonexistent, I haven't felt very good, and just all around didn't feel much like running and consequently I haven't done much.  But I have a resolution (not a new years one--just a resolution) that I am going to be consistent until I rest after the Ogden Marathon where I am going to shoot for sub-2:45.  Then I am going to try to make the USU Cross Country team the following summer/fall.  So there it is.  I have my goals and so now I will have some motivation and something to shoot for.

Went 5 miles today just easy.  Before and during the break my left hamstring felt slightly tweaked so I took it easy today on it, and it felt pretty good.  That area of that leg is always the part that gives me problems when I do have problems.  I wonder why.  Anyway, I felt really good today and the facemask and gloves my parents gave me for my birthday worked wonderfully.

Good to see you back in action. And I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who was sick and lazy. We can get in shape for Ogden together.

From lisap on Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 22:22:33

i'd like you to know that i have a legit excuse. i just don't want to talk about it.

and i'd love to train for ogden but i can't run it. i'll be on a plane to spain. but i do want to run one some weeks just prior to that (haven't decided which). we could still do some training

From Predog on Mon, Jan 12, 2009 at 23:50:40

yep I'm back at it. I feel quite a bit more motivated now so that is good.

6 miles on the treadmill because it was freaking cold outside today and I have a cold and didn't want to totally destroy my lungs for the Aggies game tonight...not to mention I would rather not get really sick.  I have decided that treadmills are quite possibly the most boring thing on the planet.  It's a wonder that people haven't started attributing suicides to them.  Oh well, got it in.  I don't think that they give you as good of a workout though...I wasn't even breathing hard at 6:40 pace even though it seemed fast enough.  I had to go under 6 before I really started working hard.  But that was only for the last half mile.  Felt good to run warm though instead of freezing.

From Jon on Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 23:39:46

Yes, treadmills are boring, though I find it much harder to run on them than outside. Some people find it easier, some harder.

Don't get sick. Have you been to many basketball games yet?

From Predog on Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 01:19:20

yeah mostly the best times for me are in the afternoon and evening on weekdays. anytime on saturdays.

I'll try not to get sick...believe me I don't want to. haha. And I don't think I've missed a home game yet! We just had a really good Fresno game. A nail biter but a good one. :)

5 on the treadmill again.  I HATE the treadmill!!!  But I haven't had time earlier to go and I don't really want someone in a car to go sliding across any ice and pwn me.  So I am consigned to the treadmill if I don't get a run during daylight.  But I felt good.  Was a little sore so I took it real easy...easy to do on a treadmill.  I think one of the worst things about a treadmill is you can't really go with the way you feel.  you are stuck to 8.5 mph or else!  and if you wanna change it you have to push buttons and fanagle with it....basically it's LAME.  But oh well.

Joe/Ruthie - My schedule is tight tomorrow and I need to start my run at 6:30AM. I plan to start at my house and head up to campus/North Logan area, and do my North Logan Loop. If you are up that early, I'd welcome the company, but of course I understand if early doesn't sound great to you. I'll be running past Aggie Village up 10th north around 6:50AM to give you an idea of timing. Let me know if you want to meet somewhere in that area.

Yeah Pah Tempe Hills are lots of fun. I start at the bottom and go all the way up to the highway about 0.3 of a mile, good workout, except at night when it is dark I get strange feelings when I'm down in that place. Ran the long way to track practice 4 miles.  Did their warmups for another easy 1.5.  3x3x300m workout (300, jog 100, 300, jog 100, 300, recover) x3.  Felt really good to really work the speed. 300s were ~ :50 pace give or take a couple of seconds either way on some of them.  4x100s afterwards.  2 mile run back home to cool down.  Today was a killer day and my legs are trashed but it felt great to get a tougher workout in.  Hopefully this week will really help my speed.

2 miles of warmups counting warming up with Karl and the track team.  Legs are trashed from yesterdays speed.  3 mile easy run.  4x400s. Times were:  63, 62, 63, 61.  I was surprised that I was able to crank out that much speed considering that my legs were so sore.  4x100 strides again.  2 easy barefoot miles on the grass to cool down.  Legs feel better after the workout than before...imagine that.  It was actually hot today!  Weird.  Haven't had that sensation forever.

Was dog tired today so I took a nap in the afternoon instead of running.  After FHE the weather was so nice I just couldn't pass up a run even with it being late so I went a quick 9 miles with dinner still in my stomach (not such a good plan).  But I finished out the run in good form and it wasn't too bad at all. Hope this weather trend continues...the snow is almost gone!

I'm BAAAAACK!!!  Sorry it's been awhile...that last couple of months have been really bad.  No motivation, no energy, pain all through my legs whenever I ran no matter how slow or short I went, no cardiopulmonary or mental endurance at all...just not good.   Have no idea what was wrong other than just perhaps stress in some form, although I'm not exactly sure from what...finals aren't THAT bad.  Wasn't in shape in any sense of the word for the Ogden Marathon...so I tried emailing them on multiple occasions to see if I could drop to the half but they would never get back to me so I ended up skipping out on the whole thing.   So basically I just gave up for a month or two and figured when my body was ready to run again it would let me know...so here I am...I feel decent now and I think now that I've got a more stable schedule and not as much stress with school (if that's what it was even) I can try to ease back into things and get into shape again...hopefully in time to get a decent showing at TOU.  6 easy miles today on the Canal trail and then back along Canyon Road and back up to my new apartment.  Pace actually wasn't too bad and my legs weren't too tired.  I could tell it's been awhile though.  But pretty good for a first go in such a long time. Just a little rusty but it felt good to get a workout in.

My mileage is really low right now (obviously) but hopefully in little while I'll be able to hang with y'all again on some more of those mountain trail runs. First Dam to Spring Hollow on the River Trail with Scott (redrooster).  Felt GREAT!  There were about a million people on the trail...it seemed like some sort of fitness club or something was out for a run too.  And then on the way back we passed a pack of tourists.  Anyway, the run was awesome.  We actually pushed the last third or so pretty hard because it was downhill and everything.  But it just felt great.  Legs feel awesome!  I think I am finally getting it back.  Felt really good about this week.  I think I am going to take another week like this and then start increasing the mileage bit by bit until I am back up to par.

This morning's run was awesome.  I started out and went down to the Canal Trail with the intention of getting on the River Trail for about a 10.5 mile run.  Met Cody at First Dam and he said he was going up Green Canyon if I wanted to come so I decided to go partway with him.  He was looking for Paul (who was apparently at First Dam the whole time) and so we ran back down the Canal Trail for .75 miles to find Paul, then we didn't find him and started heading back the way we came and he showed up and said Cody had run right past him but that he was feeling sick and wouldn't be going with us.  So we headed back up past First Dam and onto the Shoreline Trail.  Went on that and took the single track.  I went with Cody as far as the dirt parking lot in the mouth of Green Canyon where the single track starts and decided to turn around there.  Went back the way I came.  It was a beautiful morning.  Rainy but it was really pretty.  Quiet, not a lot of people out, waist high grass and wildflowers on the Shoreline single track.  Just a nice morning.  I felt really good too.  I thought I was going to be short on my mileage because I wasn't hurting at all but the course tool says I got 12.4 conservatively.  Longest run I've had in months and it didn't even feel bad at all.  Maybe I'm getting this back.  :)

Very easy North Logan Loop this morning.  Lungs felt like I was breathing really hard for some reason but running past a a person cutting a hole in the road with a gas saw all the exhaust and dust at the beginning of my run probably wasn't helpful.  Legs felt reasonable for a Monday.  Didn't hurt at all so that's a good sign after Saturday's longer run.  I just took it really easy because I'm going to try a "Small Workout" tomorrow (as opposed to a Big Workout since I'm not fit enough for a Big yet).  I'm kind of excited although it will be weak sauce compared to what I want to do later on.

"Small Workout"

2 mi. warmup to the USU track.  Started my workout.  Planned for 6x1000's at 5:50 pace (3:37 per 1000m) or a little slower than my last 10k pace.  After the first one I decided 5:50 was too easy so I dropped them down a couple of seconds to I think 5:44 or 5:45 pace (3:35 per 1000m).  200m jog for recover in between each 1000.  Here are my splits:

1     3:37 -- felt too easy, although the first one usually does it still felt like I wasn't working

2     3:35 -- this pace is better

3     3:35 -- still felt fine, halfway!

4     3:35 -- feeling good but starting to feel the fatigue catch up with me...breathing is harder

5     3:34 -- starting to feel my energy going fast but somehow pulled a second faster

6     3:36 -- including a massive sideache the last 200m and a 4 lane detour to avoid a face full of water from the sprinklers--I pushed it a lot harder the last one then the time shows

.5 mile recovery jog around the track

Started running back to my apartment the long way, taking it easy at first then after about half a mile or so, then increasing to about 6:30 pace.  I felt like I was gonna die but kept thinking it would be worth it down the road.  Kept that up for a couple of miles then cooled down the rest of the way back.  My legs are now officially trashed...they haven't felt this dead in months but I think it will pay off.  Now the question is if that was too much to start with.  I guess we will see how I feel tomorrow and the next day.  I signed up today for the Strawberry Days 5k down in Pleasant Grove this Saturday.  I feel like this summer I should race a lot and get in the groove with that as much as possible so I've got a bunch of races I'm looking at including possibly 2 half marathons depending on how I'm feeling.  We'll see what happens.

Easy recovery run this morning.  Tabernacle-Island loop.  Legs actually didn't feel too bad other than I had absolutely zero energy in them.  Didn't beat the 9 minute guy by very far today...But considering the workout I did less than 10 hours before and the fact that I haven't done a workout like that in months I'd say I was pretty happy with my recovery.

Good luck at your race.

From Predog on Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 19:41:28 from 75.165.246.29

thanks...I'm just gonna see what I can do. I think the last 5k I did was TOU last year. And the last good one I had was in the first part of August of last year for the Wash. Co. Fair. We'll see what I've got. I just want to get into the habit of racing so it's not such a shock anymore.

Drove down to Orem last night and crashed at my cousin's apartment there.  Got up at 6, got ready and drove over to PG and got my number and stuff.  I couldn't remember if the race started at 7 or 8 so I showed up in time to run at 7 but it ended up being at 8 so I had tons of time to warm up.  Just jogged/ran around the neighborhood and parts of the course the whole time.  About 30 min. before the race I put my flats on and did a few accels and stuff and stretched out a bit to get loosened up.  Course looked fairly easy with the first mile being mostly a slight downhill.  Second mile is mostly a slight uphill/level and the last 1.1 is mostly level with a little downhill at the end.  Realized I forgot my watch but it didn't matter because I was just going to see what I could do.  Expecting it to be fairly tough where I haven't raced in forever and have zero speed training under my belt in who knows how long.  I figured I would call it good if I broke 17 by a few seconds.  Boy, did I miscalculate.

Started out and the first part I felt like this was going to be a long and painful race, but I kept the pace down hoping that I would have energy enough to make a decent performance.  Legs are tired from Tuesday and this week.  Stayed in the back of the lead pack of about 5 or 6 runners, most of them being college runners/ex college runners from BYU I think.   There was a high school kid in there too who said he was going to break 17 so I kinda stuck with him that first mile thinking if I beat him by a little I would do alright.  Hit the 1 mile mark going uphill and all of a sudden I got my second wind.  The high schooler dropped behind and I started closing on 4th place.  Got him.  Got passed by another guy, passed him back a little before the two mile mark.  Passed one more, running in second behind a guy who ran for BYU and feeling pretty good considering.  Got passed again by a different guy with about .75 to go.  Currently in 3rd.  Rounded the final turn and could see the finish line about half a mile down so I started picking it up.  Thought my kick was pretty good but got passed again with about 200m to go.  Finished 4th overall.  The clock had stopped at 15:00 so I didn't know what my time was...the guy that passed me right at the end said he got himself at 16:19 so I figured I was about 3-4 seconds behind him giving me a low 16:20's which I did NOT expect at all.  And I didn't even feel that bad besides wanting to puke for a minute in the chute (don't worry I held it back).

After the finish is where this gets really boring.  Basically I cooled down and sat around and waited for an hour for them to get the awards thing going.  Granted, there were a lot of runners for a little 5k like that, but that was my only complaint was the post-race organization.  Awards took them forever because they thought they had to have a little drawing for everything under the sun.  Ended up raining so they just hurried and read off names, but I didn't get my trophy until 2 hours after I finished.  But that's alright I guess.  I took first in my division (legitimately--I was really the first 19-24 year old across the line...the other guys were older I guess) and 4th overall.  Actual time was 16:18.7.  Winning time was 15:54.  I think the course was pretty legitimate too as far as distance goes...it was easy for the most part (especially with the first mile being downhill), but I think the distance was pretty well on just from the way they had the mile markers and the 'one mile to go' marker.  I don't own a Garmin so I dunno though. Oh, and I met Allie from the blog for the first time.  As far as I know we were the only bloggers there but I don't know many from Utah Valley so I could be wrong.

Overall I am extremely happy with this race.  PR since being home off my mission by 22 seconds!  I guess it's only my third 5k in that time but I'm just tickled.  Didn't think I was in shape enough for that.

From Sasha Pachev on Sat, Jun 20, 2009 at 19:00:14 from 192.168.1.1

The course length is accurate, Runner's Corner races are properly measured. The aided nature of the course makes it a bit fast. I would say maybe 10 seconds faster than a pancake flat course based on the times I am seeing, 20-30 seconds faster than your normal loop course of accurate length.

So in short, you definitely had a sub-17:00 quality performance. I will have more analysis once the official results are posted and we know who ran what.

If you want a reliable measure of your 5 K fitness, run Draper Days on July 18th, or Murray Fun Days on July 4th. Draper Days is a faster course, less hilly. Both are certified.

From Predog on Sat, Jun 20, 2009 at 19:23:51 from 75.165.246.29

Allie, thanks and it was the only race going on this weekend that I could find besides one here near Logan for "Nibley Days" or whatever that I think I would have won by 5 minutes even if I didn't break 17. I guess there was the WBR too and I had two different teams ask me to run with them at the last minute, but alas, work got in the way on Friday. :(

Jon, thanks! I hope I can keep that kind of thing up.

Sasha, thanks and that's good information to know...I think I am running Bryce Canyon Half on the 18th and the Blacksmith Fork 15K up here on the 4th though. I'm not really working on my 5k that much right now...mostly just trying to get into the habit of racing by doing it a lot even if it's just a 5k. My big focus right now is getting ready for the TOU Marathon and getting back in shape after a not-so-stellar winter.

geez, I wish I could run a 16 minute 5K, or even an 18 minute 5K. I look forward to start hitting the track again this fall, maybe you can help me so I can break 38 at first dam. I am going to slowly ease back in and see if I can avoid reaggravating the pesky foot and leg, kind of take it easy for a few weeks and see what happens. hope the painting is going well, hope to join you guys for a run sometime soon.

I was going to go meet Jon, Cody, and Paul at the PW again this morning but when I walked out of my apartment at 5:15 I realized that I had left my car parked up on campus on accident.  I drove to my job there last night which I usually don't do and then I forgot that I did and walked home.  So I decided that by the time I got up there and got my car they would already be gone and I went back to bed for 45 minutes more sleep.  Anyway, got up and ran up and got my car and drove it down to my place (luckily USU Parking didn't give me a ticket or anything) then went another 6 miles really easy via the Canal Trail and First Dam and stuff.  Legs were tired from yesterday but felt better than last Wednesday.

2 miles warmup down to the HHS track plus 300m around to the starting line (yeah, I'm a purist...I have to start where the waterfall is)  4xmile repeats with 400m recovery jog/run in between intervals.  another 3.something miles back home the long way.  It was hot today.  Good ol' Southern Utah summertime.  :)

Here are my splits:

5:43 wind is going to make this difficult...I guess that's why they call it Hurricane

5:40 less wind on this one and I'm warmed up

5:42 a little more wind, starting to feel it

5:42 really pooped on this one, got behind, but kicked hard the last 200m and finished respectably.

Overall the workout was really good.  I think I finished stronger than last week's 1000s.  I think these kind of workouts are really going to help me a lot.

Got up at 5:30 and grabbed a tortilla because that was all I had to eat that didn't require some cooking in my house.  Jumped in the car and drove to the start up Blacksmith Fork Canyon.  Lines looked really long but I soon discovered that those were the preregistration lines.  It was well worth the $10 extra I paid for race-day registration to just walk up to the table, write my name and address down and tell them I wouldn't sue if I died and get my chip and number--all within 2 minutes while all the preregistered people looked on in disgust.  Ran around for a bit then located Paul and Cody.  Chit chatted with them, used the porapotties, etc.  Paul found a unopened Gu on the pavement and then found an unopened Clif Bar in one of the portajohns...we were just waiting for him to find an unopened Powerade or something out in the road to make a complete prerace meal.

Race started out and I felt really good.  No idea how to pace a 15k so I figured I would try to run my mile splits around 5:50 or so.  Paul and a few other guys took off right from the start.  I figured a few of them would drop off because there were a couple of high school kids in the pack and stuff so I just hung back for a couple of miles.  Cody was right there with me for that first couple too, and then we hit a downhill and I kind of opened up down it and didn't see him again.  Felt amazing for the amount of running I haven't done this week.  Perhaps that's why.  Started fighting a side cramp after about the first 5k but it subsided over the next mile or two.  Hit the 10k feeling pretty good still.  Passed the high school kid that was ahead of me at about the 10k or so.  Started gaining on the next guy, hit the big hill about mile 7 and almost caught him but he just had too much left at the top for me to finish him off.  Got into Hyrum and welcomed the long gradual downhill to the finish.  Last part was painful but I kicked it in really hard I thought for a 15k.   Official time appears to be 53:16 but my watch says 53:04.  Cody and Paul seemed to think the timing was off significantly and I know I started and stopped my watch correctly and it's not off by 12 seconds over an hour.  So I've gone with my watch time here until further notice.  Very happy with this race.  Felt really good and relaxed.  Just enjoyed it.  Here are my splits/times as well as I can remember them...can't remember 9 miles of splits plus 5k and 10k splits while trying to run a race.  Plus the 5k and 10k weren't marked so those are sheer guesswork.

 mile 1: 5:42

mile 2:  5:46

mile 3: 17:17?

10k: ~34:something

that's all I remember with any degree of accuracy.  I need a Garmin.  That's on my Christmas/birthday wish list.  haha

Sorry I haven't blogged for awhile.  Still at it.  Not getting nearly as many miles as I want, not because of physical limitations--I feel great--but because of serious time constraints.  I think it is driving me nuts.  But this week and next shouldn't be too bad.  I'm going on vacation to Oregon with my family and plan to have some time in the mornings to run there.  Anyway, easy run this morning.  Mind was definitely elsewhere but I made good time and felt pretty good anyway.  Ran a short version of my usual Providence loop.  Only had about an hour today to run.  Typical.  I hate work.  Oh well, only a couple more weeks of work and then I can get some quality training in hopefully enough to do half decently at TOU this year.
